Frank Romano did a book all about this, it’s called The History of the Phototypsetting Era. It’s hard to find a copy for sale but you can probably get one through an inter-library loan.2 -

You could try Affinity Photo. It has pretty robust OpenType support and is a pretty good alternative to Photoshop (and much less expensive).1 -
