It was intended to be 72 points to 1 inch, but the 1/72 inch point was rounded down to .0138 inch so it could be expressed decimally.
According to the PostScript Language Reference, third edition, at p. 183:
"The default [PostScript] unit size (1 ⁄ 72 inch) is approximately the same as a “point,” a unit widely used in the printing industry. It is not exactly the same as a point, however; there is no universal definition of a point."

Right now my favorite is Type Drawers. It’s a double entendre that is unpretentious and friendly. Coming from Mark I can see it as one of those little bits of midwestern friendliness that goes a long way!
