The background of this, Nick, is that Г evolved to have different pronunciation in Russian /ɡ/ and Ukrainian /ɦ/. So when Ukrainians need to write the /ɡ/ sound—most often in foreign words—they use Ґ.

The letter Ґ was removed from the Ukrainian alphabet during much of the Soviet period, but was restored during Perestroika.
  • A couple of months ago, the government set up a special commission to create the official design of the Ukrainian alphabet. So it's still not clear what will happen after some time, maybe even the design of standard letters will be different (for example, the Rutenia font).
