I think @"Thomas Phinney"'s suggestion is for copying from PDF, copying from other kinds of documents that has access to the text not only the output glyphs wouldn't be affected.0 -

Depends on what you want to do with that information, you can either check the first four bytes or check the presence of CFF or CFF2 tables vs. glyf & loca tables.3
