FYI: guidelines for Omani rial sign

The new Omani rial sign will be encoded in Unicode 18.0, which will be published a couple of months from now. The Central Bank of Oman had published guidelines for its usage, and has just posted updated guidelines that allow for a narrow aspect ratio glyph in fonts, suitable for tabular layout:

    In Latin settings with proportional figures too, I suspect designers will opt for a narrower design.

    After reading the guidelines, I am happy to see that they largely understand and adapt to typographic issues in ways that some previous currency symbol guidelines have failed to do. Perhaps a result of criticism of the earlier document? But good on them for dealing with that, rather than ignoring it.

    Yes, the spacing guidance is odd and unsustainable, bound to be cast aside by type designers. But the overall package is quite strong nevertheless.

    Not bad...is this the first actually reasonably thought out (in terms of how it has to adapt) new currency symbol proposal in our lifetimes?

    Seems like 20C4 is the most likely candidate.

    As in this case, the guidelines for the Saudi riyal sign were revised after getting reviewed by some professional type designers.
    Seems like 20C4 is the most likely candidate.
