A calligraphy friend of mine informed me of his passing. I met Ward years ago and saw him demonstrate blackletter lettering, starting by carving a large edged pen from a piece of bamboo with a large knife he said he always carried. My condolences to all who knew him.

    Dunham played an important role in promoting/reviving broad-pen lettering in the USA, and his textura calligraphy was published in multiple editions of the Speedball Handbook. Based in San Francisco, he was a founding member of the Society of Scribes in New York City, and an inspiring teacher.
