Hi everyone,
We have been working with Braintree (owned by PayPal) for the processing of our credit card payments.
Everything has been working reasonably well although the customer support has never been good. The problem is that if you receive a Credit Card payment that is higher than usual, it turns out that they might hold the funds, until they decide the "risk" factor of your business. They ask (or demand) for more informations, like complete bank statements of
the business. This is what is happening to us now, and it feels awkwardly like blackmailing to be honest.
Does anyone have a recommendation for an alternative?

That said, I have a personal anecdote to support my suggestion. When I bought Darden Studio our then current merchant provider refused to transfer the account, insisted I open a new one, then rejected my application on the grounds that I'd not owned the company long enough to be a safe risk. You have to laugh to keep from crying!
So I had to scramble and I simply walked into a branch of our bank (which had been our bank for a decade and knew our income was steady) and threw myself on their mercy. They actually gave me a pretty good contract and I'm quite happy with it. After I had a chance to breathe I looked into other options and none were better. So, the old fashioned notion of working your existing relationships seems to sometimes still be alive.
