Quotes about typography, not by white guys...

I had an idea to start each lectures in my typography classes with a quote about typography. .. Having gathered a collection a couple dozen I find (not surprisingly), they're mostly by white men with a smattering by white women... a demographic that doesn't reflect my classes at all.

Thanks.

    It doesn't matter.
Shall I attribute that one to you? :)

In the end, nothing matters, does it? But until then... Matter or not, roughly half my students are women and probably close to half come from different backgrounds, many with different first languages, including, that I know of, Farsi and Chinese, so it would be nice.

If you can read Spanish or know someone who can help you with it, you will find interesting quotes in articles written by influential Latin American / Spanish designers and typographers at the Tipográfica web archive: https://www.revistatipografica.com/category/revista/

Thanks... I don't speak Spanish myself, but have friends who do.

Russell, I commend you for helping your students see themselves as typographers by seeing typographers like themselves.

    First, check out Alphabettes.

There are also many good quotes to be found in these talks. I encourage you to share any here that you found worthwhile for your class!

I found this video from Saki Mafundikwa talking about type design and colonialism that you might find interesting: https://vimeo.com/237783159
Thank you!

You should also check out Design Feast. You may have to dig a little to find quotes specifically about typography, but it is a good site that reflects the diversity of the population.

    Ok white man.

He was close. It shouldn't matter. Unfortunately, in the world we live in, it does.

The Crystal Goblet by Beatrice Warde is a wonderful source.

... Roughly half my students are women...
When I wrote that, I couldn't count... Actually 3/4 of my students were female this year.
