Quotes about typography, not by white guys...

I had an idea to start each lectures in my typography classes with a quote about typography. .. Having gathered a collection a couple dozen I find (not surprisingly), they're mostly by white men with a smattering by white women... a demographic that doesn't reflect my classes at all.

In the end, nothing matters, does it? But until then... Matter or not, roughly half my students are women and probably close to half come from different backgrounds, many with different first languages, including, that I know of, Farsi and Chinese, so it would be nice.

You should also check out Design Feast. You may have to dig a little to find quotes specifically about typography, but it is a good site that reflects the diversity of the population.

It wouldn't matter, in a theoretical model of our world so far away from how a society works that, for me, even saying it shouldn't matter is a bit of pointless, or even more, it distracts us from what should be done.

Fact is that in our society, on so many levels, (even without speaking about colonialism, patriarchy, dominant religions, etc...) some stories take so much space compare to others that, in a exponential hunger, they end up devouring everything.

Thinking that it will be all become balanced by itself, or that once balanced, the equality of the world will stay balanced for ever, looks like a fantasy.

It is everyone's duty, in this world or another, to always be careful not to childishly monopolize the mic.

So no, I don't think he was close, but we're starting being a bit off-topic.
