I would say continue, and see where it leads. Perhaps the serifs could come to a point, to match the points in the “crossovers”, for the sake of thematic/aesthetic consistency which, IMO, is important. And see how it plays out across the alphabet, and in different weights. Or as Marc says, try a tangent such as stencil-ization, because in every development you pursue—especially if you don’t look at “similar to” typefaces—you will exercise your own taste and personality as a designer, which will make the finished family (or just one font, if that’s what you eventually settle on) one of a kind.
Why abandon pursuing your idea just because “somebody else has already done this”? Even if you start out with the same single idea, the result will end up someplace different anyway. You may do a better job than others, or worse (subjectively), but as long as you have the time and resources, and it feels good... Just Do It ✔
