What are the oldest known preparatory drawings for type? The Romain du Roi?

    Mergenthaler Linotype had hand drawings in their archives (really large), about 16-18 inch cap height, dating back to early 1880-90s. I saw them. Alpha numeric drawings for the United States government (federal Reserve). Printing money I guess. A lot of other typefaces as well. I just seem to remember looking at the Federal stuff which had an incredible amount of parameter specs on each drawing. Really cool stuff.
