First, a terminology nitpick: a “typographer” is one who uses type. A “type designer” makes type.

If you’re using Robofont, one tool that could be very helpful for beginners is Glyph Nanny.

Also, Nina Stössinger recently linked to a few resources on vectorizing letters that could be useful for learning bezier best practices.
