M & H Type and Arion Press apprenticeship positions offering training in both the foundry (casting) and pressroom (typography and letterpress printing). 

The nonprofit Grabhorn Institute supports paid apprenticeships designed for those interested in career training and long-term employment, not temporary or transitional experience. Training is in the crafts of typography, letterpress printing, bookbinding, and type casting. Apprentices learn while working on publishing projects, contract jobs, and production. Experienced craftspeople pass along skills in traditional and current technologies, design, and workmanship, and grounding in historical precursors.

M & H TYPE, the oldest and largest surviving type foundry in the United States, founded in 1915, offers training in typography, typecasting, and Monotype composition that can lead to long-term employment. Commitment is for a minimum four years of employment, two years in apprentice status, followed by two years in journeyman status.

Apprenticeship program overview: Intensive work/training for a minimum of four years, minimum starting pay at $12.00 per hour for a forty-hour week, health benefits through Kaiser, paid holidays, one week paid vacation during first year, two weeks paid vacation during second year. Apprentices also receive education in the history of printing and book making, and training that can include computer-generated typography, hand composition, polymer plate making, operation of letterpress printing equipment, and bookbinding. Field trips and special out of town training are offered. 

Qualifications: Candidates must have at least a high school education (ideally a college education), proficiency in reading, understanding of grammar, competence in spelling and arithmetic, and mechanical aptitude.
