How did you used to do interpolations without middle masters?

Not that long ago, before Glyphs, FontLab only allowed two masters per axis. For example, if you had a weight range between thin and black, you couldn't put a medium master in the middle. Rather than use MM interpolation, I used to use the blend tool, make manual adjustments to the interpolation, then subdivide and repeat. Nowadays, I can add as many intermediate masters as I want. So how did you handle it?

I remember doing a four master setup once where I ignored one of the masters, effectively giving me three masters—one at each end and one in the middle. So, you’d go from 0-1000 on the X direction, with Y set to 0. Then 1-1000 on the Y direction, with X set to 1000. I don’t think I ever used this trick very much.

I always used the Blend tool, too.
I often found it necessary to make the heaviest weight non-blendable with the others.
