Oops, I just realized I forgot to donate last year. I'll fix that.

Maybe start by setting some fundraising goals (along with what you might hope to do at those levels) and suggested sponsorship amounts?
  • Yeah, I'm going to do some planning and figure out costs but here's the loose plan:

    • Pay moderators a monthly stipend. (I'd like to do like $100/month)
    • Cover all yearly fees (~$1,000/yr)
    • Hire someone with vanilla experience (not our Python vanilla) do develop the site to suit our needs. (no idea what the cost would be: we'd have to discuss improvements and new features that we'd like to see.)
  • 1000 $ per year seems quite high. Server costs for our forum are 102 € (~120$) per year.

I think this is what Jens was mentioning above about the export plugin - it does seem like "porter-core" has vanished; the code is still be available here but describes itself as "legacy." And it seems like the open source situation is worse than my earlier speculation about an "open core" business model: this message from Vanilla says they are abandoning open source all together :frowning:
Discourse's Vanilla importer, and a tool called Nitro Porter both exist, but I think they presume you have access to your Vanilla database. A reddit post I came across seemed to indicate that for paying Vanilla customers, requesting a full database backup along with the associated attachments might be possible, but I couldn't actually find anyone confirming that worked for them. It saves enough money that it could be worth writing to Vanilla and asking; if they decided to get rid of open source support just a month or two ago, it seems more likely they'd be helpful/sympathetic to these problems right now than in the future
It's also possible this is all beside the point if James doesn't want the ongoing maintenance burden that can come from self-hosting, which is totally understandable. But if their business is going through changes right now, idk if that changes the calculation for the long term

That's what Vanilla bills me for their software.
