Hello all,

I’m looking to move fully into type design and would be grateful for a junior or entry-level opportunity in this field.

I graduated from the Lazi Akademie (Esslingen, DE) with the Lazi Award (highest distinction). Both my 3rd semester Major Project and 6th semester Capstone Project were fonts I designed. Though my degree was in Graphic- and Communication Design, I found myself constantly drawn to type. The guidance I received was more generalist in nature, so I didn’t get to explore the deep technical or historical aspects of type design in a structured way.

After graduation, I worked as a graphic designer in a small company where my input wasn’t really welcome; classic "the boss decides" dynamic. I eventually moved into Desktop Publishing at a translation company, which was a better fit. Still, I’ve always known type is where my real passion lies.

I’m self-taught in many areas of type design, with a growing portfolio of fonts (currently 8 published). You can find my work here:

Right now, I’m reworking my first ever font, Dacian Donarium, originally made during my second semester in Uni. My vector skills have improved a lot since then, and I want to do the typeface justice. I’m also planning to add a special secondary character set once the polished weight is done.

Promoting my fonts is not my strength; partly due to time constraints, but also because I honestly don’t enjoy doing it. I’d be happy to partner with a foundry that could help sell and promote my existing typefaces, since someone more active in the field would almost certainly get better results than I currently do.

Although I’ve been working on type independently for a while, I’ve never had the chance to be surrounded by other type designers. I haven’t met any in real life so far, and only recently started lurking on TypeDrawers. That isolation has definitely made things slower and more difficult at times. It’s one of the reasons I’m especially eager to join a type-focused team or environment where I can grow, exchange ideas, and feel more connected to the community.

I’m eager to deepen my type design skills professionally. I tend to take my personal projects slowly because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and because time outside of work and personal life is very limited. I’d love the chance to focus on type full-time, and I learn quickly when pointed in the right direction. I am an agreeable person, but I do admit when I don't know something, and don't shy away from asking questions if I am confused or stuck.

A few more quick facts:
• I live in Romania and work regular office hours, but I’m naturally a night owl and open to working across different time zones
• I’m proficient in InDesign (my main DTP tool), and although a bit rusty, I used to be quite skilled with Photoshop and Illustrator (especially for vector work)
• I work on a Windows PC and use FontLab as my main font editor. I briefly tried Glyphs on an older MacBook. It felt intuitive but slowed me down at the time. I’d be happy to adapt to Glyphs in a professional setting
• My newer workflow involves drawing directly in FontLab (e.g. for my latest release, Lugoj), while older fonts were first drawn in Illustrator
• I was born with a physical disability and have had operations on both hands; it doesn’t affect my work at all. I’m fast with both mouse and keyboard, and I type quickly. I only bring this up because in many countries, there are benefits for both the employer and the employee.

Languages: Romanian (native), German (fluent), English (fluent).
CV available upon request.

I’m good with critique and constantly trying to improve. Any job opportunities, advice, or invitations to foundries for my existing fonts would be warmly welcome.

Best regards,
Tudor Banciu
