I have a fairly large collection of very old type 1 fonts which I’ve been slowly converting to OpenType format so they remain useable.
On many occasions if I load a type 1 font into FontLab and the regenerate it as an OpenType font, some characters will render as blank spaces (not .notdefs) when I install the OpenType Font. Randomly changing the starting point of the contour will almost always fix this problem (without making other changes to the outlines)
Are there specific rules about how starting points should be selected? Why should this affect the ability of the system to render the font?
