Drawing Diagonals

How do you guys draw diagonal characters (lowercase and uppercase)? Would like to know your usual methods for all sorts of typefaces, monolinear sans serifs, rational serifs, oldstyle serifs, and so on.
The only resources I found are Briem (only on bold, contrast serifs), Letter Fountain (not really thorough), and Lettering and Type (quite good but only for mono linear / slightly contrasted sans serifs)
