Automatic "Smart Metrics" introduced

Just saw this post come up for automatic "Smart Metrics" (spacing and kerning) in Fontself Maker.

They make some notes about there being an art to it still and potential need for manual adjustments, but it's interesting to see nonetheless. (My impression has been that Fontself is more geared towards hobbyists.)

There’s also iKern, which is endorsed by many designers including Hannes von Döhren and Peter Biľak. And I think DTL Kernmaster does automatic kerning but I can’t find it on their web site.

I heartily endorse iKern. Best (semi-)automated kerning I have seen.

I am sure the semi-automated nature of it is part of its success—tuning for best results per different typeface.

And knowing the fact that FontSelf persistently develops, like this one new feature, I think I'll give it a try in the near future.

GPOSMaster, the successor of KernMaster for macOS, Windows, and Linux, is almost ready for release: some rough edges still have to be removed, however. The algorithm is basically the same as in KM, but instead of .be files, it works with OpenType fonts and features files.

Don't forget Scanahand and FontCreator, as they also have generate metrics and automatic kerning features ;-)
