superior (and inferior) numbers

Is there any "standard" or custom widespread in the setting of superior (and inferior) numbers? The superior numbers are for me more relevant, because they constitute the numbering of the footnotes. Does their base have to be aligned with the upper section of lower case letters? Should they have the same size as the numerator and denominator numbers? Any information on this subject is welcome! Thank you
