MS Word 2011, Mac, some characters revert to default font after input

A client is having a strange problem with a custom font and existing Word documents in Word 2011 on a Mac. When cent or schwa glyphs are input, with a keyboard or the Mac OS Character Viewer, they switch to the default font. This does not happen with new documents, only existing files. I have been able to reproduce the problem, and I can even input the glyphs in an old file if I use them in a new file first. The fonts work just fine in every other program, and all other characters in the font seem to work fine. Has anyone ever seen this?

Are the older documents '.doc' as opposed to '.docx'?0

No, they’re .docx.0

Do you know which version of Word the old documents were created in and on what Platform and OS?0

This is pretty thoroughly documented at their site.0
