Absence of Standard Stem Hints causes fuzzy inline (InDesign, Mac Screen, otf format)

Left: no Standard Stem Hints. Right Standard Stem Hints.
As this is for a layered typeface, I thought it made sense to remove all hinting (as many of the layer fonts have different dimensions).
However, the absence of Standard Stem Hints causes a loss of definition (left image) for some of the layer fonts in InDesign on my iMac (although not in the Mac system’s Pages application).
What is the best practice?
