Kerning in FontLab Studio VI

I was going to take this question to the FontLab forum but it's not really a bug or a specific question about a feature. I was wondering if anyone had any tips on getting a more familiar sort of kerning experience in FontLab Studio VI. And I guess by familiar I mean more like FontLab Studio 5. I've watched @Thomas Phinney explain how it works in the TYPO Labs 2017 video and I didn't see anything that looked like the kind of kerning I'm used to. I get kerning working in a glyph window but can't seem get that full screen of kern text experience. What's the trick?
