Enabling HTTPS

I think it's good to enable https protocol on TypeDrawers. Because as you may heard before, now all browsers treat http websites as "Not Secure" and it affects SEO and access to the website now and in the future.




This doesn't happen all the time yet. But it will be very soon.

You can find a free https service like Let's Encrypt.

    I agree this is coming up and will be a problem, so better to get ahead of it.

    https://vanillaforums.com/en/plans says the "Corporate" plan includes SSL. Is TD on that plan?

    Oh! I never paid attention that TD is on Vanillaforums. But HTTPS could and should be done in the hosting control panel regardless of site contents. Unless the plan includes hosting as well.

    And also I think there are open source free options available to create a forum like TD.

    Do you have access to the server or is that been taken care of by the Vanillaforums subscription?

    Open source is only free if the responsible parties’ time is worth nothing. Expecting James to port over all the data and start managing the forum software is a bit much.
    That's why I prefer "libre fonts" or "libre software," to emphasize that it's about freedom, not $0.

    Hoooh-ly cow that is an outrageous price.

    $1,199 a month is pretty expensive. But it probably makes sense for big companies running their user support as a busy forum.

    Are many of Vanilla's paid services used by Typedrawers? I'm sure you folks thought about this already, but since it's open source it could be ran on an own server (including HTTPS through Let's Encrypt, DDoS protection through Cloudflare). If Vanilla allows you to export the current data it could be imported.

    Of course you'd need someone to set this up and do the maintenance, so you're just shifting tech responsibility to a different party. But dang, even for half of $1199 a month  I'm sure you can find a very capable person/party for that.

    Actually I agree. Cloudflare could do a lot more than just HTTPS including DDoS, caching, performance,... and the basic plan is free.

    Vanilla's prices are strange comparing the product, in my opinion.

    If the old plan gets HTTPS support, indeed. If they'd force you to "upgrade" to a modern plan, though...

    AFAIK Typedrawers is still on the old $50 a month plan.

    Vanilla isn’t built for small sites like Typedrawers. It’s for big brands that use forums as marketing and tech support tools. For them the cost of Vanilla plans is immaterial. Typedrawers has been on Vanilla since they were a tiny tech startup, so they kindly let us hang around.

    It is actually very kind that they are doing this. I hope somehow the HTTPS thing gets resolved too :)
