Goudy Old Style Italic is 1915 too, according to man himself.
Only the swashes where added later (and named as Cursive).

About Hobo, I have this crazy and untested theory that it may have originated as hand-lettering for the Colgate toothpaste. It looks a bit like it is made out of toothpaste, isn't it?
