Why didn't they pick a Canadian designer?

I'm starting to wonder if the negative blow-back from the 'design community' to a new high profile logo isn't designed in to the process... I can't even begin to explain how that would benefit anyone, but the list of very expensive/very ugly brands by firms that should know better just keeps growing.
