I'm pleased to announce that Microsoft is hiring a full-time lead for the Microsoft Typography Team!
Want to change the world with typography? The Windows and Devices Design team is looking for passionate, talented team lead to help define and drive the future of typography at Microsoft.
We aren't just looking for someone to 'turn the crank', but to establish a strong vision for the Microsoft font library and the use of type in Microsoft products. What should Microsoft's typography look like in 5 years? 10? How and where can we grow? How do we make this vision a reality? These are the kinds of questions that you'll answer in your role here.
On a day-to-day basis, you'll actively drive high-quality typography and typefaces across Microsoft, partnering with designers, feature teams and others across Microsoft to ensure that their work meets the highest standards. You'll also write design briefs for new font acquisitions, licenses, or commissions, work with the Typography Program Managers to triage and prioritize new font work and font bugs, and seek to evolve and improve font production and development process to increase quality and reduce costs.
As lead of the Microsoft Typography team, you'll become the central voice for typography at the company, responding to inquiries, engaging in outreach to encourage better typography across the company, and work with Microsoft's legal and business development teams to properly protect Microsoft's fonts and font technologies. You'll also actively engage with the typography and design community, representing Microsoft's typographic interests. Participating in conferences, online communities, blogs and interviews, you'll be the primary person to talk to about Microsoft typography.
Key Qualifications
Experience working cross-discipline, ideally leveraging design, program manager, development, test, marketing and legal resources to achieve business results. You’ll have examples of successful large-scale projects you’ve driven to completion.
Proven track record of working with off-site creative and engineering talent, negotiating work for hire and license agreements. Ideally you’ll have negotiated deals with large font vendors, as well as small foundries and independent type designers, language experts and consultants.
Expert knowledge of typography is necessary. Experience designing and producing typefaces, and experience with non-Latin writing systems and multi-script typography is desirable. Knowledge of font formats and font technology such as OpenType and OpenType Layout, TrueType hinting, complex script shaping, Unicode, and rendering technologies is a plus, but not required. Solid communication and team management skills. Experience as a team lead is highly desirable.
5+ years experience in a typography or graphic design-related leadership position, preferably in corporate environments. BA required / Masters preferred.
If the above sounds like your kind of gig, get in touch! We'd love to hear from you.
