Font preview icons in Windows

If you chooose ‘Large Symbols’ in ‘View’ in the Windows Explorer, .otf and .ttf files get a preview thumbnail that shows the letters Abg of the typeface. You will have the same if you go to the Windows fonts directory. Some files only show ∑√≠. It seems like something is broken there. I’m guessing, it is something about the encoding, but i could not see what it is exactly.

Does someone know how this works and what it needs to fix this?

I don't know how you change it in Windows but if you're making a font and you don't want to see the this, in Fontlab under Supported Unicode ranges, uncheck Mathematical Operators.3
