Nicole Dotin and I are excited to announce the next edition of Latin One, part of the Practica Program — now in its 6th year supporting type designers around the world.

What’s new this time?

Latin One is now offered in a hybrid format, combining pre-recorded lectures with live feedback sessions. This allows students to learn core concepts at their own pace while still receiving individualized guidance during live meetings. With this new format also comes a new, lower price.

This is an exhibition of my work, at an art gallery in Ottawa, under the auspices of the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts, of which I’m a member.

It’s something of a retrospective, showing typefaces I’ve designed over the years, but most of the typography is new—12 large posters commissioned for the show, from 12 designers from around the world, and new specimens I’ve created for the show—large hanging banners—and recent vertical videos for social media. Books, magazines and newspapers (The Globe and Mail, of course) provide “fonts in use,” and there are even some costumes with font fabric.

We are excited to share that the program of our Fonts & AI online conference is now ready for you to check out! This is the first fully dedicated conference to the topic of fonts and artificial intelligence.

We will spend 2 days looking at how AI can impact the world of type, from theory to AI models to practical implementations. We will hear about community concerns, discuss the legality and ethics of AI training models, and examine the threats and opportunities that AI represents.

The conference is fully online and talk recordings will be immediately posted up for participants to catch up if they miss any. Recordings will remain accessible for at least a week after the event.

Congratulations to all colleagues on the holiday!

The Day of Bulgarian Alphabet, Bulgarian Enlightenment and Culture (Bulgarian: Ден на българската просвета и култура и на славянската писменост) has been celebrated in Bulgaria since 11 May 1851 (old style). Today, this holiday is celebrated every year on May 24th (new style) and is an official holiday of Bulgaria since 1990. In 2020, the name was changed to “Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and of Slavic literature”.

Cyril and Methodius had been saints since the 9th century, and the commemoration of their saint's day had been celebrated in Bulgaria since the 12th century.

Similar days celebrating Slavic writing and culture are observed in North Macedonia, Russia and Serbia.

WAVE (Writing as Visual Experience)

A conference about writing has recently taken place in Cambridge. It's called WAVE, that is, Writing as Visual Experience (19th-22nd September). It's been hosted by Views Project (https://viewsproject.wordpress.com), lead by Philippa Steele. The atmosphere has been fantastic throughout the three days of speeches.

During the conference, we the attendants have enjoyed loads of good content, from ancient writing practices to two artistic points of view about writing. There has even been a typographical approach: David Březina delivered the speech "Structural analysis of the visual appearance of scripts".

With WAVE and Grafematik (Grapholinguistics in the 21st Century, https://grafematik2024.sciencesconf.org), we now have two remarkable conferences focused on all things writing, great opportunities to gather with people (academic and not) with similar interests and very diverse backgrounds.

I hope this is of interest to the Typedrawers community.

Hello everyone,

Even though this is not an “event” so to speak, but somewhat is...

Many of you here might have seen news about Words of Type already, here or on other media.
I’ve posted about Words of Type a few days ago already in the “Resource” discussion topic, and thought that it might be good to post it here too, for more 👀

To respond to a need for more accessible typographic knowledge — and not only for Latin script but many many more — I created a project that I could only dream of during my graphic design student years. An encyclopedia of typography, translated (accurately and well written) into multiple languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese, Korean), illustrated, and freely accessible as a website!

There are already plenty of great books about (Latin) typography and type design. I have many (but unfortunately no ALL of them!), and as the main source from which I’ve learned about typography (and also life), I LOVE books. But for these fields that are — now more than ever — in constant evolution, a physical version would bring too many down sides. Especially for the many other languages that can join, and more words to be added. Also, there is our need for quality international communication, easier access to typographic knowledge for scripts other than Latin, access to other people than type designers only, so I thought that an online version for such resource is the best. Maybe printed goods may exist in the future, but I’ll do things one at a time.

I’ve already worked on many aspects and invested a lot of personal savings for Words of Type to “sprout”, but this project needs the expertise and work from many people including me (translation, proofreading, illustrations, web development, etc.). To work with everyone in a decent collaboration (can’t for such help for free!), I need to collect 50k€... I know this is a huge amount, but for such kind of website, I made my best to lower the budget to as low as reasonably possible.

So I launched a fundraising on Kickstarter some two weeks ago. So far, the campaign is 25% funded as the moment I’m writing this message. There are still (or, for me, ONLY) 11 days left before it ends.

I know that Kickstarter campaigns have many risks, especially with such a high goal. And I could’ve gone for sponsorship systems, from individuals and/or companies right away instead.

But I think that having Words of Type — a project for people — to be initially funded by people, is a good idea. There are a few plan Bs that I’m thinking of, more and more seriously these days, given the higher risk now that the campaign may fail... 😭 But I keep faith in it, we never know... There is still a bit of time! 🤞

Call for venues: workshop tour

Hi All -

I've decided to take my licensing workshop on the road. I am currently planning sessions for Western Europe in May and June. Please let me know if you are a member of a professional group or academic institution that might like to host me. The tricky part on my end is out reserving a space and outreach to potential local attendees. When i have offered the workshop online the response was overwhelming but I frankly hate doing it online (and love doing it in person).

If you are not in Western Europe but think your organisation would be a good fit let me know so I can start thinking about your region.

Here's a bit about the workshop, which is called "Demystifying Font Licensing":

The workshop is 3 hours, needs at least nine attendees to run and can seat up to 40. The purpose is to orient people to how font licensing works, and the wide range of types of licensing. We read actual licenses to help participants get over the fear of reading legal documents. I have taught the workshop to a total of 300+ people at Typographics, AtypI, Typecon, Fontstand and online.

It is useful for both customers and font makers and can be taught in a mixed group. In fact, the workshop is best with a diversity of experiences in the attendees. If the sponsoring organisation is school I encourage the professors to attend and the school to invite local designers.

My fee is totally negotiable. In the past I have often donated my time for fundraisers and to support conferences I believe in. Don't let money be a barrier to learning, we can figure out what's fair.

I'm wondering if there are industry standard security measures for protecting self-hosted web fonts?

I've designed the font myself, and would like to use it on my website without someone having the ability to pirate it. From what I've read even the biggest web font providers cannot completely prevent font piracy, so I'm hoping to make it as bullet-proof as possible.
