  It’s because weights differ more, percentage-wise, at the light end than the heavy end. Choosing a more exponential-ish progression tends to make the relative change from one weight to its neighbors …

  I think you must have used the “Make outline version …” setting (as the screen shots suggest) instead of the “Change weight …” one.
