Felt Tip Roman

Felt Tip Roman (1992, 2003) was one of my most popular fonts for a long time, and the first font I ever released. It’s my own handwriting carefully digitized by hand (not auto-traced). Handwriting fonts are very common now, but they weren’t in 1989 when I started working on it. I just wanted to see what it would look like, not imagining that other people might want to use it. (Thank you, Mark Solsburg of FontHaus for encouraging me to release it.) I added two more weights, Bold and Heavy, in 2003 to create a more versatile set of fonts.

  • Felt Tip Roman Original Art

It’s actually the back of a sheet from a phone message pad. You can see some of the rejected characters here (that “section” symbol is tricky), but mostly I went with the initial sketch.
