CharSet Builder

All type is custom, and just like the individual shapes of letters, the character set of a font project is an equally important design decision. Alphabet’s CharSet Builder uses standardised build-blocks with information defined by organisations like the Unicode Consortium, ISO, Microsoft or Apple and enables users to create their own custom character set files by combining them arbitrarily.

Select Build blocks

Commonly referred to as “writing systems” in the Common Locale Data Repository (CLDR) by the Unicode Consortium, a language system is the combination of a script and a language. Therefore, languages may appear more than once in this list.

The Unicode Consortium has been releasing specifications to facilitate the use of digital type. While sorting characters in Unicode blocks is helpful for computers and applications, it is not a system designed specifically for depicting language.

Different organizations like Apple, the ISO and Microsoft have defined their own character sets in the past, focusing on language systems as well as technical regulations. Some are presented for legacy purposes, others are still in use today.
