How do you teach type design?

Hello type design teachers,
I have been teaching type design to both bachelor and master students for 4 years now and I am interested in learning about how others teach, especially for introduction courses, teaching the basics. I have explored different paths such as making the students:
I have limited teaching time each year so I am always looking for more effective ways of making the students as skilled, independent and inspired as possible.
Also there's the question of softwares. I have taught Glyphs, FontLab and more recently Fontra. I think Glyphs is the easiest to understand for beginners but it's huge problem is it's Mac only and a lot of students work on PCs and can't afford a Mac. FontLab's interface is all over the place, each year students are encountering new bugs and problems I didn't even know existed and I find myself spending more times debugging their files than actually teaching, it's very frustrating. Fontra is not as user friendly as Glyphs but I have had good result with it, also the fact that it is free and cross platform is great! (with Glyphs and FontLab I could ask for temporary licenses but this meant that the students wouldn't be able to open their files once the educational license had expire, which is a shame). I think I will stick to Fontra for my bachelor students. In the case of master students they usually already have a preferred software so I find that being software agnostic is usually the best way. What do you think? Do you use other font editors for teaching?

It works well because there's diversity, so they can chose a typeface that excites them and wood type is usually wonky so there's room for refinement + a lot of letters are missing so they have to be creative in order to figure out what these should look like. But I've done this twice already and would like to renew myself. Maybe some of you could think of other source material for a similar process? - Make a font from a picture of lettering
A bit more challenging, I think it was too hard for some students to translate the organic rhythm of lettering into a systematic typographic system. It makes them want to design script typefaces which I think is too hard for a first font. - Make a font from their own calligraphic work
The first step is an introduction to calligraphy and is usually a huge success but I have sometimes hit a wall when going from the calligraphy by hand step to the digital step. A lot of students can demotivated once they have to redraw their letters in font editors, they realise the letter shapes are not as good as how they looked on paper and they can't figure out how to make them good even with guidance. I think the gap between what they can achieve in calligraphy and what they consider to be a "proper typeface" is too big. - A mixed approach between calligraphy and revival
Starting with an introduction to calligraphy and then moving on to a revival assignment. I find this to work pretty well because calligraphy makes them understand letters proportions and weight distribution in a way that is difficult to apprehend if you go straight to the computer. And the revival work makes it easier to start on the font editor. - Fork an existing open source typeface
It's nice to make experimental stuff quickly and students can learn a lot from just looking at the source file (if it's not a mess) but I feel like they learn more when designing their own typeface from scratch.

I was teaching type design as part of a busy 3-year graphic design program at York University in Toronto, 25 years ago, in which there was a lot to cram in to “typography,” including animation. I theorized that type design could be streamlined by asking students to design a unicase typeface (fewer characters!) I thought I’d seen it all, but I was astounded by the variety they came up with. It more than confirmed my belief in such an open-ended approach.2

I teach type design at the BA level, and to a wide variety of students. Probably fewer than half are Digital Media Arts majors. Essentially none have previous type design experience (very few have Bezier drawing experience at all). So the class is much more about understanding letterforms and experiencing an intensive and iterative creative process, rather than job-prep.For their main project I have students invent a brief, by thinking of a text-font document that relates to their major or interests. Examples have included art museum labels, folk music album liner notes, pet supply e-newsletters, engineering tech press releases, etc. We then negotiate an appropriate text font style (I use the chapters of @Stephen Coles's Anatomy of Type book as the style definitions—humanist serif, transitional, geometric sans, neo-grotesque, humanist slab, etc. etc.) Then most of the semester is given over to completing a spaced UC/lc/figures/basic punctuation font in Glyphs.Having them start with a meaningful brief is key for developing their own judgment about design decisions.Defining a style as their model, rather than a particular font, gives them precedents to consult but also lets them have some agency in their creation.There's a "secondary" project that asks them to do additional work, and options include coming up with a weight variant, italic variant, or display variant of their main project. For those I only ask for a "OHandgloves" character set to keep it manageable.Class meetings are mostly "workshops" in which I circulate around the room coaching students as they work. Among other benefits, having much of the work done in class helps with the drawback you mentioned that PC users can't run Glyphs on their own machines. A switch to Fontra may be likely in future offerings but I haven't done that yet.4

If I were to, I would try to find a way to structure it around seeing and thinking, rather than on making. Projects would be numerous, quick and disposable, rather than spending time working on trying to make a font, and focused on training ways of looking at and understanding shapes and relationships. Software use would be minimal, and limited to apps that the individual student already knows, without any requirement that shapes made in exploratory projects be translatable into fonts. If students want to work entirely in analogue media, that’s fine and even encouraged.
Font-specific tools and software wouldn’t be introduced until a follow-up course on font making, which would begin with technical introductions to text encoding and processing, font formats, and glyph processing.0 -
I find it strange that so much about type design is taught with a calligraphic basis ONLY. Calligraphy today is only practiced by a small number of dedicated people, not the common human. Even handwriting, in our world of key capture, is relegated to a few scrawled notes to ourselves, an occasional shopping list. There is very little mention of any other drawing or designing way to design type. The tools have changed, the usage has changed, indeed, the design methodology has changed. Why have we not changed the way we teach the craft in the 21st Century?0

Because the tools used for calligraphy (and anything else handwriting-related) shaped the way we construct letters and how we read. Contrast, tension, weight distribution, italic models... Everything, pretty much. It's vital to have that understanding, because everything else is based on that. Of course, there are many other ways to make letters and find shapes TypeMedia for example teaches stone carving, students have explored stitching, baking, potato cutting, and many other mediums. However, all starts with handwriting.

It STARTED with sticks dragged in dirt, stones scratched on walls, then writing with reeds and pens, but does not end there. There was also construction with drafting tools, Asian Brush painting, and now Bezier construction. It is fine to have an understanding of Calligraphy and pen logic but that is not where it needs to stay, now.0

It's a very intellectual way to teach something. And, as a rookie teacher, I may even have used it.
But as a veteran (40 years of teaching), I think the "making" approach is more efficient, and certainly more pleasant for the students (I should add for the teacher).
And I think this choice of teaching method is valid in most domains.
Of course, some exceptions could be clearing mines, surgery, aircraft piloting and other specialities of minor importance!

I wouldn’t classify my proposed approach as ‘theory before practice’. There would be lots of practice, but it would be in the form of rapid exploration exercises rather than sitting down to design a typeface. This is informed in part by the recognition that a typeface is a precious thing, but the skills needed to make one are developed by throwing a lot of things in the trash bin. In my model, the trash bin would be filled every day.

I think there are students that good at following theories, tutorials before doing anything, but there are also students get bored real fast when have to take in, than doing. For some reasons, I have been learning/practicing type design in my own weird order and ways, one thing I realized is that not everyone suits for one method, and sometimes your brain just tell you "oh that's boring and im getting distracted" , i often end up watching the same tutorials (20mins) for 5 times to finish it. That's when i realized i just can't follow things when im not doing it. Then I start just make whatever i like, and start to like it, of course I woulnd't say this is very efficient way of learning but at least it keeps my interest in a good state. To me, liking doing something is the start of going further with something.0

And the letters in which our books are set have a thousand-year history, created by people completely different from us in their way of life, and yet they seem "correct" to us.To change a sign, we must first learn to repeat it; we must understand how it works. How the calligraphic nib moves, how the strokes connect, how the thickness and slant of the strokes change in their natural form. Sans Serif type has been with us now for centuries and need not follow pen logic, yet we read it just fine. We read best what we read most so if we choose to read traditional Roman serifs, that is what we are comfortable with. If we choose to read sans, that is what we become most tuned to read. Tinkers 1930s research was based on test subjects of that era, not ours. We can move on just as our forefathers moved on from Blackletter, Cuneiform, and Spenserian script. There is plenty of room for growth.0

I’m sort of with Chris on this, while at the same time I think it is important to understand the development of a writing system as involving structures and dynamics derived from tools. In this, I don’t think the term calligraphy is helpful, because that is a category of textual art. I look at text manufacture as a continuum, from scribes to typographers, with changes in media and technology but basically targeting the same thing: things for people to read. Type designers can dip into that continuum anywhere for inspiration.
So how does one learn to make a particular letterform? Whether one is starting with tool exercises or making a revival or trying something new from scratch, what one needs to learn is how to see. That is, to look at shapes and understand their structures so that one can translate that understanding to new shapes. This is not theoretical. This is 90% of what I do every day as a professional type designer seeing my own work in progress. Seeing is the critical skill. Learning how to fiddle with beziér curves or use a particular piece of software’s kerning interface is just mechanics.4 -

One more, somewhat belated, argument: without resorting to calligraphy, I don’t know how to explain why the Cyrillic letter И cannot be obtained by simply mirroring the Latin letter N. Or (especially difficult problem!) why the Cyrillic Я cannot be obtained by mirroring the Latin R.

A little off-topic, but on the subject of “what we read most, we read best,” I’ve been working on an italic for several weeks, which has the disconcerting effect of making every roman font I now see appear backslanted.
I use the upside-down option in the FontLab Metrics panel a lot, to keep myself somewhat objective.0 -

Or (especially difficult problem!) why the Cyrillic Я cannot be obtained by mirroring the Latin R.I would say what matters in the differentiation of И/N and Я/R (and in many styles К/K, the Cyrillic letter in a three-way relationship with Ж and Я) is ductus, i.e. the construction of the letter in its various styles of script. That is evident in calligraphy, yes, but also observable in the most quotidian writing and in the evolution of the letters in their typographic guises.2

The learning process itself, it seems to me, consists of levels of understanding, with each subsequent level overthrowing something that previously seemed unshakable.
First we ask: “why does the letter “И” have a thin diagonal” - “according to the rules of calligraphy”
Then we ask: “but the diagonal of “Я” is thick, why” - “the architecture of the sign requires this, so in order to the thin leg does not break, here we are going against the rules of calligraphy”
Afterwards we add the requirement of graphic rhymes within a set of characters, compensation in the connection of strokes, work with counterforms, and more, and more, but if you pull out the calligraphy from the bottom of the stack, it will not necessarily collapse, but become askew.At the same time, yes, I fully admit that the “ability to see” can remove many questions and take learning to a different plane: “is it beautiful? if not, we redo it until it’s just right.” Perhaps this is also a valid method.

Rotation of the tool occurs in many kinds of calligraphy, either between strokes or within strokes, varying the patterns of thick and thin stroke modulation. There is no ‘rule’ that says the angle of the tool must be maintained consistently, even in Latin script which is one of the more consistent in this respect.For some letters in some styles of Arabic calligraphy, the pen is tilted, the shape drawn with the corner, and then filled in.Calligraphy is not one thing.1

The brush is also used in Calligraphy and not just flat brushes. It does not give the same result when held at a consistent angle.1

I've been teaching type design off and on at a few universities in the Philly area over the past ~10 years. I try to teach the class not as if I'm teaching a new group of type designers instead, I'm trying to teach graphic designers to look at type like a type designer.We start with a basic Noordzij pen nib lesson and some TypeCooker sketches while expanding on their Typography lessons about categorization. The first project is then a "revival" where they pick a typeface from the 1923 ATF Book and make a revival of one of the styles. This is mostly to learn glyph construction, how letterforms relate to each other within a typeface, and tool fluency.The second project is a single-weight typeface of their own design. I have the students make a prompt for a typeface; it could be something they could use for a project in another class or their portfolio. As long as it has a "reason for existing" (and it gives me something to grade against). Then they spend the rest of the semester refining the typeface based on the parameters they defined and are ultimately graded on how well it works in context.I can't expect them to develop all the skills necessary to make a typeface in 16 weeks so judging the project against a user-defined context makes it much easier to gauge success than how good the curves are. It also works to really get the students to judge a typeface on its merits for each situation.4

I believe type-design education benefits from embracing a diversity of perspectives and methodologies.
Many type-design courses begin with individual letterforms, sometimes using writing as their primary point of departure and sometimes approaching them independently, before proceeding through iterative refinement of spacing and proportions. This craft-based approach has proven its value over time. It develops visual judgment through repeated observation and refinement, allowing students to internalize typographic conventions through practice.
At some point, however, students may begin asking not only how things are done, but why they are done that way. Understanding the structural principles behind typographic conventions can transform design from a process of imitation into one of informed choice. Rather than limiting creativity, such understanding expands the range of possibilities available to the designer.
A type designer can work convincingly within established conventions of rhythm, proportion, contrast, and structure, creating typographic harmony without necessarily questioning their origins. Conventions remain effective even when their underlying logic is invisible. I summarize this with what I call the Donald Duck Doctrine (or Ducktrine): if something looks enough like Donald Duck, moves enough like Donald Duck, and quacks enough like Donald Duck, it will be recognized as Donald Duck. Likewise, a typeface can successfully embody a typographic tradition without its designer fully understanding the structural principles from which that tradition emerged.
My educational approach is grounded in research into the structural relationships between medieval and Humanistic writing traditions and the development of early movable-type forms, from Gutenberg’s textura to Renaissance roman and italic type. This research demonstrates that the transition from writing to movable type was not primarily a process of iterative optical correction, but rather a process of making explicit, formalizing, and standardizing the intrinsic structural regularity already present in the written forms to meet the requirements of movable-type production.
In this view, standardization does not impose structure on writing; it reveals, codifies, and systematizes structural relationships that were already there. The LetterModeller application embodies this interpretation, making these underlying structural principles explicit and available for study.
Consequently, my educational approach brings together practice, history, and theory. It certainly addresses optical correction and technical decisions, but it also examines the historical development of typographic systems and the logic behind their standardization. Most importantly, it explores how understanding these structures changes the way designers perceive type and, ultimately, how readers experience it. Learning to design type therefore also means learning to recognize the organizational principles underlying typographic form.
This research-based approach places greater emphasis on analysis before production. Students may therefore spend more time developing an understanding of the structural principles behind typographic form before producing finished designs. In return, they gain a systematic understanding of the design process that supports more deliberate decisions. It is not intended as a replacement for established methods, but as a complementary perspective for students who wish to understand not only how type is made, but why it has developed the way it has.

@LeMo aka PatternMan aka Frank E Blokland…emphasis on analysis before productionI can recommend David Petersons’s The Art of Language Creation.
It’s a brilliant introduction to linguistics, and while one may not want to read the whole book and start conlanging, the first part is very accessible, and the last part gets into letter forms. (Yes, I skipped the middle!) Because, sooner or later, as a type designer, one will spread out beyond one’s native language and script, so it’s nice to ground one’s practice in the big picture.
I was struck by the parallel between type design and conlanging, as he described how the internet affected the development and spread of both.
I’m not sure how a linguistics overview may be incorporated into a type design course, it might be a bit much.2 -
A few months ago I made this small web game for new type designers: https://fontbob.com/gameYou work with real Bezier outlines, starting with 'n' and 'o', then download the font you made at the end. I think it's a good hands-on exercise before moving into a full editor.7

@Jasper de Waard thank you, good ideas! I also think having a 'why' is kind of missing. My philosophy has almost been to remove all the 'why's and focus only on the act of dragging nodes around, which is hard in itself.
Could be an appendix after user finishes the font, showing before/after corrections, and explaining the 'why' (why thinner horizontals, why open up junctions, etc).
