The purpose of FOSS software isn't to be zero dollars, it is to give access to source code; therefore knowing how to compile source code is a reasonable expectation. The reason someone uses something — or wants to use something — may have little to do with the intent or ‘purpose’ assigned to the thing by the person who made or published that thing. ‘Zero dollars’ is exactly what makes FOSS software attractive to the majority of users, and we know this because they never do anything with the source code. The ‘purpose’ of the source code being accessible is irrelevant to their use of the software. Requiring compiling from source is just gate keeping.2
