I was asked to create an icon font to be used on industrial machines with a touch screen display, as well as in normal computer applications. The machine displays have different resolutions, but most of them are low resolution black/white LCD screens that do not have sub pixel rendering. As you can imagine, the icons are not rendered nicely – uneven stroke thickness and distorted shapes.
They don’t have a design system that dictates font sizes, so the icons will potentially be used at any size.
Is there any feasible way to improve the rendering of the icons?

Looks like I misinterpreted this – they state that unhinted fonts use more antialiasing which is better to preserve shapes. Since there is no antialiasing with these screens, it could be valid to use hinting. Though probably very timeconsuming.
