 May I ask you, though, exactly in what respect is it different from Knuth's original font? Is the average stroke width greater?

 I will point out that darkness was parametrized in Knuth's METAFONT. Different modes in MF produce blacker fonts for different printers (cf. the lexmarkr mode). But when BlueSky made their Type 1 fonts, they didn't choose a very black version of CM.
