Are contextual alternates disabled by default in InDesign CS6?

  I create a new document and only std. ligatures are on (Mountain Lion).

  I suspect you changed your app defaults. You do that by choosing options when no document is open.

  I don't see any preferences for OT (not that I've changed any). So it leaves the only other explanation: usual computer randomness.

  Start InDesign, close all document windows, enable contextual alternates from the OpenType popup submenu. That will change the default setting.

  Note that some use of the Glyph Palette to insert glyphs will disable the contextual alternates feature (and the ligature feature) as you are working. Damned frustrating.

  But I’ve never heard of that behavior affecting the default preferences and thus new documents.
