Aside from the semi-annual Codex, what are good periodicals related to type, design, and writing/paleography? I’m not talking about the regular design magazines like Eye and Comm Arts and Baseline, I’m shooting for stuff like academic journals that publish enough good stuff to justify subscribing rather than buying an issue when it gets mentioned on a good blog.

Visible Language is sometimes worthwhile, and back issues are often worth looking out. I've not seen current issues for a couple of years though.1

Printing History, put out by the American Printing History Association, may be a fit.0

I suscribed to "Visible Language" in the 70s-90s. All my copies are from that era. Several are good. I don't know about current issues.0

Letter Arts Review is probably the best calligraphy and lettering magazine. Not academic, per se, but often interesting. Strongest on the western calligraphic tradition, but with occasional articles on Arabic, Hebrew, etc.0
