Introducing Counterpunch, a next-generation font editor that runs directly in your browser.

Inspired by the counterpunch, a traditional punch-cutting tool from the metal type era, this modern digital type design tool introduces vital concepts such as full bidirectional complex script shaping, in-place component editing, code-driven dynamic glyph filters, and a digital assistant that streamlines everyday font engineering tasks.

For those who have grown weary of the repetitive edit-compile-test cycle of traditional font editors, Counterpunch offers a welcome solution. The editor provides a genuine what-you-see-is-what-you-get experience, where the editor rendering is 100% consistent with the end product that users would see in browsers, design applications, or text processors. This eliminates the frustration of dealing with vowel marks or complex contextual substitutions and positioning that do not display as expected in the editor.

Counterpunch is fully open-source, licensed under the GPLv3 license, which ensures that it will remain free from commercial exploitation.

Although the editor is currently in its alpha stage, with many features still in development, it is already a valuable tool for debugging and analysis. You can load your existing font sources and utilize the assistant and dynamic glyph filters to examine them with greater confidence and in unprecedented detail.

Counterpunch comes with Python scripting out-of-the-box, and the assistant can catch and repair your broken Python scripts and even translate your established scripts from other editors to work with the Counterpunch object model. It’s self-healing user code.

A fully functional Public Beta is expected for late spring, and the release of the finished product is slated for October 2026.

While the editor is free to use for everyone and without registration, the Counterpunch project operates a paid monthly subscription to use the assistant. With prices varying by country to make the tool universally accessible, you’re getting state-of-the-art font engineering at your fingertips while supporting the growth of the project financially.

“We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us.” – Marshall McLuhan

Counterpunch has a whole lot of future product ideas lined-up. Stay tuned and follow along for the ride.

The editor is currently in Alpha stage with many features not yet implemented, and correct display depends on compatibility with fontc, Google Font’s new font compiler.

Here’s a small teaser video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwCjRV_TzAE
And the website: https://counterpunch.space/

It was using a basic slant/rotate mix, which deformed the height of outlines and lost horizontal extremes.

So I developed a completely new algorithm, which is purely geometry-based, without any rotation involved. That means: No stem info required, works with removed overlaps, and even works on quadratic curves if necessary (though not implemented yet). No nodes are removed/added, so master compatibility is guaranteed. Horizontal extremes are perfectly maintained. If you’re wondering about vertical vs. italic extremes, I recommend this Typedrawers topic.

Like the first Italify, curves are corrected as well as diagonal stems (think k, v, w, x…).

Currently, the algorithm is available on a service basis. The long-term goal is to make this a public Glyphs plugin, but there is still a very long way to go.

So, if you have a sans-serif font and can’t bear the thought of making your italics manually, here is your solution. Sources must be in Glyphs format. Get in touch for pricing and further information.

E-mail: sebastian.carewe at gmail dot com

Hello everyone,

I recently came across a note on GitHub mentioning that FontBakery is gradually being phased out, and that Fontspector is the future of font quality assurance. It’s recommended to migrate to Fontspector, as FontBakery seems to no longer be actively maintained.

Currently, there also seem to be issues with installing FontBakery, particularly under Python 3.13.7, which has caused frustration for many users. This raises some important questions for me and others:

Is FontBakery still being developed? Will there be any updates or official support for newer Python versions? Or can we assume that FontBakery is being gradually phased out?

Fontspector as the new solution: What steps are needed to install and use Fontspector on personal systems? Is there a detailed guide for installation and integration of Fontspector into workflows? How does Fontspector differ from FontBakery in terms of usage and functionality?

I’m sure many of us who rely on FontBakery share these questions. Any answers or further information would be very helpful, especially as we may soon need to transition to Fontspector.

Looking forward to your thoughts and experiences!

Hi all,

I have not posted here in a while, but I am trying to get a clearer picture of what browser-based font editors exist today. All kinds of tools or experiments included.

I'm mainly interested in zero-install editors that run entirely in the browser and do not require downloading a desktop app. It feels like this space is slowly expanding, and may invite designers who'd never consider using a normal font editor.

To my knowledge, some existing zero-install editors include (incomplete list):

- Glyphr Studio
- FontStruct
- Typograph Studio (recent, private beta)
- FontBob (a browser-based editor I am working on)
- Yanone has mentioned a new browser-based editor in development
- Variable font axis playgrounds that allow instance export (depends how strictly you define "editor")
- Fontra (browser-based, but requires installation)

I am sure I am missing things.

I would be curious to hear:

Are there other browser-based font editors or experiments worth noting?

What limitations do you see of browser-based font work?

Not meant to endorse any specific approach, just interested in mapping the space.

/Carl
It's a new font editor that's free, open-source, and cross-platform.

I'm a software engineer by trade but have always been interested in type design. I wanted to learn, and instead of learning to draw glyphs I procrastinated my way into building a font editor. The project sat dormant after a strong start about a year ago, but I've picked it back up recently and have been making steady progress.

There are many great tools out there, but not as many open-source options. Fontra has done a great job leading the charge and I know there are a few others floating around. I'm trying to bring product thinking and design taste to this — making it feel like a premium option, but free.

Where it's at right now:

Bezier drawing and point editing (pen tool, select, smooth/corner toggling)

Snapping to points and metrics

Full metric guides (ascender, cap height, x-height, baseline, descender)

UFO support, TTF/OTF loading and export (using fontc)

Undo/redo, copy/paste, transforms (align, distribute, rotate, flip)

Glyphs app like text mode

Components (early stages)

Glyph grid view and search

And probably more I've forgotten.

I'm not distributing builds yet — it's still very early alpha — but the code is all on GitHub and I'm building it in the open and I post a lot about my progress on X. I'd love to hear what others would want in a font editor if they could have it. I don't have years of experience as a type designer, so that kind of input would be really valuable. I've also got a discord if you want to hang out or say hi!

Website: https://www.shift.graphics

GitHub: https://github.com/shift-editor/shift

Discord: https://discord.gg/582FxBdNH7

thanks!

The letters had to be redrawn in many places to create natural-looking scuffs, chips, and internal scratches. I started sketching them in Adobe Illustrator using the Edit Selected Paths feature. However, the redrawn outlines often came out quite noisy, with many unnecessary nodes. The paths were usually left open and sometimes had the wrong winding direction. Additionally, each letter’s outline had to be moved from Illustrator back to Glyphs, which required realignment, path closure, correction, and cleanup, and all of this had to be done for a large number of glyphs. This plugin automates all those technical steps, handling them under the hood. It has saved me weeks of time and allowed me to focus on the creative aspects instead of the technical ones. I hope it helps you too.

I want to make a color emoji font containing emoji not present in unicode. As I am a hobbyist and I always use open source tools for creating my font, I was wondering is there any free and libre tool for creation of color emoji font?
Adobe provide tools for creating color svg font, but as they are not supported in browser other than Firefox and old Edge, it will not serve my purpose. I am searching for similar tools for making colrv0 or colrv1 fonts.
Thanks in anticipation

Hi everyone,

Every day, billions of lines of text appear on screens and pages around the world, yet the creative process behind choosing and managing the right fonts often goes unnoticed. Type designers, graphic artists, and typographers know well how challenging it can be to quickly find the perfect font within a vast library.

This need inspired us to create MainType, our Windows-based font manager, back in 2004. Now used by thousands of professionals worldwide, we've recently launched MainType 13—a major update designed to streamline your workflow when browsing, organizing, and selecting fonts.

What’s new in MainType 13?

Grid View: Quickly switch from the classic details list to a visual grid showing your fonts as large thumbnails. It’s intuitive, visually clear, and makes browsing large collections much faster. Switch back to Details View anytime with just one click.

One-click Group Export: Right-click any font group and instantly export fonts while preserving their original folder structure. Great for sharing font sets or archiving project assets.

Additionally, version 13 comes with improved Unicode support, a refined shaping engine for better previews of kerning, alternates, and complex scripts, plus UI and usability enhancements.

MainType offers a free edition that manages up to 2,500 fonts, as well as two paid editions with additional functionality.

More information and download available here:
https://www.high-logic.com/font-manager/maintype

This is a simple little tool that will help you plan the stems weights values across a 9 styles family.
Input your thinnest and boldest stems values, and it will show you a wide range of possibilities to get you started.

The first column will provide steps of equal size.
The last column will provide progressive steps.
The 3 columns in the middle will provide intermediate steps.

You can use this values as a starting point to plan your family.
The final decision, of course, is up to you!

I'm curious about others' experience with non-destructive transformations and floating-point coordinates in current font design apps. Personally, I find them more frustrating than helpful.

I constantly need to “apply rounding” to eliminate floating-point coordinates. Every so often I'll struggle to align points vertically, only to realize there's an unapplied skew transformation. The “elements” system adds another layer of complexity and points of failure I never need.

After decades of type design, I've developed precise control over details like exactly where to put the points and handles to make a 20-unit thick ampersand. While I understand this workflow might appeal to Illustrator users, I prefer direct control over every point and handle in my glyphs. There has never been a case where I would intentionally use non-destructive transformation. And, for example, in FontLab 8, I can't just flatten the layer, or I'll lose something I require, like smart-corners.

For those who enjoy these features: How do you maintain precision in your work? What benefits do you find in using them?

In the final stage I need to merge variable font with the CPAL and COLR tables which are manually created to create the color variable font. I am using fonttools ttx for the merge. In ttx documentation there is a option to merge a ttf file with ttx, but how to merge multiple ttx files? I am currently doing manually by copy paste in an xml editor.
