Studio DRAMA is looking for a Creative Type Director, a creative leader responsible for directing and shaping custom type projects for some of the world’s most recognisable brands.

At Studio DRAMA, we combine the strategic thinking of a branding agency with the craft and rigour of a type foundry. We create custom typefaces that sit at the heart of brand identities, working closely with agencies and in-house teams globally. This role sits at that intersection: creative direction, typographic expertise, and brand thinking.

As Creative Type Director, you’ll lead the creative direction of custom type projects, guiding our type designers from brief through to delivery. You’ll interrogate briefs, define typographic direction, shape narratives, and ensure work is delivered efficiently and to a high creative standard. While this is a senior, directorial role, it remains conceptually hands-on. You’ll be close to the work, shaping ideas, reviewing design decisions, and, where useful, sketching to explore or communicate direction.

This role could suit an experienced type designer moving into a more directorial position, or a senior brand designer with strong typographic instincts and experience designing or directing custom and retail typefaces. The emphasis of this role is on judgement, leadership, and clarity of direction, with technical font production skills seen as a valuable bonus rather than a strict requirement.

---

Key Responsibilities

Creative Direction & Type Leadership

- Lead the creative direction of custom type projects from initial brief through to final delivery.

- Art direct and mentor type designers, providing clear, constructive feedback and direction.

- Interrogate briefs and translate brand strategy into distinctive, credible typographic concepts.

- Set creative standards and ensure consistency and quality across projects.

---

Concept Development & Typographic Thinking

- Shape early-stage concepts and define typographic direction before production begins.

- Use sketching, references, and visual exploration to communicate ideas and guide the team.

- Review and refine work throughout the process, ensuring ideas remain strong as they develop.

- Apply and test type concepts in brand contexts to ensure they work in the real world.

---

Client Engagement & Presentations

- Design and shape client-facing decks that clearly communicate typographic ideas and rationale.

- Lead presentations and creative conversations with clients and partner agencies.

- Confidently articulate and defend creative decisions, balancing craft, brand, and practical constraints.

- Build strong, trusted relationships through clear communication and thoughtful leadership.

---

Project Collaboration & Delivery

- Work closely with the project manager to manage timelines, priorities, and delivery across multiple projects.

- Help ensure work moves through the studio efficiently without compromising quality.

- Support smooth collaboration between creative, type, and production disciplines.

---

Thought Leadership, Advocacy & Studio Presence

- Act as a visible advocate for Studio DRAMA’s approach to typography, representing the studio through talks, panels, workshops, and industry events.

- Contribute to thought leadership around type, branding, and custom typography, helping shape Studio DRAMA’s voice within the wider design and type community.

- Support marketing and communications efforts by contributing ideas, perspectives, and content, in collaboration with the studio team.

- Stay actively engaged in contemporary type design discourse, bringing insights, references, and emerging conversations back into the studio.

---

Salary & Benefits

Salary: £45K–£55k (dependent on experience)

Location: London

Full-time, Permanent

Career progression opportunities

Access to industry events, workshops, and conferences

Regular studio outings and creative sessions

Flexible working arrangements (Hybrid – 4 days in-studio, 1 day remote)

Healthcare provided

28 day Paid holiday allowance.

Travel opportunities

Be part of a small, ambitious studio making a big impact in type & branding

How to apply

jobs@studio-drama.com

Hello. I am an illustrator and calligrapher who has designed several typefaces based on my own artwork. I am working on a typeface (named Lux) based on display capitals in medieval manuscripts and icon inscriptions, with Latin, Greek, and Hebrew alphabets. (Eventually, I plan to add Coptic and possibly Cyrillic.)

While I like to think that I am skilled at the artistic aspects of type design, I am pretty clueless when it comes to the technical and programming aspects.

I want this typeface to be as comprehensive as possible, and I have included the diacritical marks and special characters needed to write almost all European languages that use the Latin alphabet, and monotonic and polytonic Greek. I would also like to include Hebrew vowels and cantillation marks in this typeface, and have designed glyphs for them. But I am having trouble getting them to display in the correct alignment.

Since unlike in Latin and Greek, the Hebrew letter + diacritic combinations do not have their own unicode points, they need to be made with combining diacritics. I don’t really know how to use these, and the program that I have been using (Type 3.2) seems really limited here. The right-to-left direction makes it more confusing, and the fact that I don’t actually read Hebrew doesn’t help either.

It occurred to me that someone more experienced in the technical aspects of type design, especially in Hebrew, could probably fix this problem quickly and easily. And that it would make more sense for me to hire someone to do this than to buy new software and spend a lot of time learning how to do it myself.

So, if you are interested in this job, please e-mail danielmitsuiartist@gmail.com.

I have attached a sample of the typeface.

Hello all,

I’m looking to move fully into type design and would be grateful for a junior or entry-level opportunity in this field.

I graduated from the Lazi Akademie (Esslingen, DE) with the Lazi Award (highest distinction). Both my 3rd semester Major Project and 6th semester Capstone Project were fonts I designed. Though my degree was in Graphic- and Communication Design, I found myself constantly drawn to type. The guidance I received was more generalist in nature, so I didn’t get to explore the deep technical or historical aspects of type design in a structured way.

After graduation, I worked as a graphic designer in a small company where my input wasn’t really welcome; classic "the boss decides" dynamic. I eventually moved into Desktop Publishing at a translation company, which was a better fit. Still, I’ve always known type is where my real passion lies.

I’m self-taught in many areas of type design, with a growing portfolio of fonts (currently 8 published). You can find my work here:
https://www.tudorstype.com/

Right now, I’m reworking my first ever font, Dacian Donarium, originally made during my second semester in Uni. My vector skills have improved a lot since then, and I want to do the typeface justice. I’m also planning to add a special secondary character set once the polished weight is done.

Promoting my fonts is not my strength; partly due to time constraints, but also because I honestly don’t enjoy doing it. I’d be happy to partner with a foundry that could help sell and promote my existing typefaces, since someone more active in the field would almost certainly get better results than I currently do.

Although I’ve been working on type independently for a while, I’ve never had the chance to be surrounded by other type designers. I haven’t met any in real life so far, and only recently started lurking on TypeDrawers. That isolation has definitely made things slower and more difficult at times. It’s one of the reasons I’m especially eager to join a type-focused team or environment where I can grow, exchange ideas, and feel more connected to the community.

I’m eager to deepen my type design skills professionally. I tend to take my personal projects slowly because I’m a bit of a perfectionist, and because time outside of work and personal life is very limited. I’d love the chance to focus on type full-time, and I learn quickly when pointed in the right direction. I am an agreeable person, but I do admit when I don't know something, and don't shy away from asking questions if I am confused or stuck.

A few more quick facts:
• I live in Romania and work regular office hours, but I’m naturally a night owl and open to working across different time zones
• I’m proficient in InDesign (my main DTP tool), and although a bit rusty, I used to be quite skilled with Photoshop and Illustrator (especially for vector work)
• I work on a Windows PC and use FontLab as my main font editor. I briefly tried Glyphs on an older MacBook. It felt intuitive but slowed me down at the time. I’d be happy to adapt to Glyphs in a professional setting
• My newer workflow involves drawing directly in FontLab (e.g. for my latest release, Lugoj), while older fonts were first drawn in Illustrator
• I was born with a physical disability and have had operations on both hands; it doesn’t affect my work at all. I’m fast with both mouse and keyboard, and I type quickly. I only bring this up because in many countries, there are benefits for both the employer and the employee.

Languages: Romanian (native), German (fluent), English (fluent).
CV available upon request.

I’m good with critique and constantly trying to improve. Any job opportunities, advice, or invitations to foundries for my existing fonts would be warmly welcome.

Best regards,
Tudor Banciu

I have attached&linked a font file to this post. I would like to get quotes for developing 8 weights from it, + matching italics, + 2 variable fonts - one for the upright weights and one for the italics. Please quote me in a DM here on TypeDrawers.

If both variable fonts can be combined into one, I will chose this option. It should be able to work in Adobe products, mainly Adobe Illustrator.

The font will family will be sold on MyFonts, so I would like to get legal information about copyright and how royalties will be split between me as the author and the developer.

If this works out, there might be more work to come.

https://we.tl/t-KScJpL4xb7

Dear fellow type designers, foundries and lettering artists !

Some of you might already know me. I have been around quite a few years now. My name is Jacques Le Bailly, aka Baron von Fonthausen.

I am currently working on my own designs, with the goal of starting my own small foundry. But in the mean time, the chimney has to keep smoking. So I am open for work. Maybe some of you might need an extra pair of hands for smaller or bigger projects ?

A small introduction
I studied at Royal Art Academy in The Hague (KABK). Over the years I have had the privilege of participating in some challenging and stimulating projects. I have worked and collaborated with a variety of type foundries and designers. From small independent designers up to the bigger players in the field. Type foundries such as The Enschedé Font Foundry, Monotype, Bold Monday, DJR, Google and Type Network. My experience ranges from large and complex assignments to small-scale projects. I have also taught typography a few years at the Willem de Kooning Academy and the St. Joost Academy.

Due to some NDA projects I can’t show some projects, but here is an outtake of typefaces I have been working on:

Macula
Macula is a retail typeface that is being sold by Bold Monday. Macula can be described as the ‘impossible typeface’ for its design is based on the concept of optical illusions. Those were extensively explored in the 1930’s by Swedish artist Oscar Reutersvärd, and simultaneously made very famous by dutch artist M.C. Escher.
Macula at Bold Monday

Montserrat
The Google Fonts team approached me to evaluate and expand the Montserrat typeface. This initiative resulted in a thorough redesign of the design. In collaboration with Julieta Ulanovsky, Sol Matas and Juan Pablo del Peral.
Montserrat on GF

Crimson Pro
It started as a correcting job of the popular Crimson Text, designed by Sebastian Kosh. During the initial process, it was decided to develop Crimson Pro as a stand alone redesign of crimson text.
Crimson Pro on GF

Livvic
A corporate brand typeface for an English insurance company LV, emphasizing and reinforcing its Fair Human Policy while also conveying reliability and empathy.
Livvic on GF

Radio Canada
Introduced and designed UCAS (Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics), with the aim of providing indigenous communities in Canada a platform to voice their opinions, preserve, modernize, and honor their culture. This work couldn’t have been done without the research and help from Kevin King from Typotheque.
Radio Canada on GF

Nunito and Nunito Sans
I have expanded Nunito and Nunito Sans into a variable font together with a team of talented type designers (Barbara Bigosińska, Sabina Chipară, and Jasper Terra). We developed a design space which now contains five axis: Weight, Optical size, Width, Slant and x-height.
Nunito and Nunito Sans on GF

My primary strength as a designer lies in my ability to think critically and push boundaries within the given assignment and context. I strive to empathize with diverse perspectives during the design process, without letting my personal taste and preferences dominate, but rather focus on the needs and objectives of the project and the client.

Over the years, I have learned to work both as part of a team –within a larger process– and independently in various roles and with different responsibilities. These experiences have taught me the importance of working toward a common goal and how valuable different perspectives can be. Teamwork is not just about dividing tasks but also about complementing and supporting each other to find creative solutions together. The synergy of diverse talents and expertise allows challenges to be approached from multiple angles, ensuring optimal performance within the given requirements.

Experienced in the following scripts:

– Latin Extended

– Vietnamese

– Greek

– Cyrillic
– SSA
– UCAS (Unified Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics)

If you have any questions or need more information, feel free to email or call me. I can send you a portfolio with a lot more projects and nice designs.

Best regards,
Jacques Le Bailly
