First, I'd like to say thank you to everyone for making TypeDrawers what it is.
This place has so much valuable information. Especially about
on font engineering, which felt very mysterious to me.
Anyway, heyo! I'm Melvian.
I make characters (as fonts), characters (the silly cartoon kind), and software (sometimes for making characters (both kinds)).
I spent the first few years of my type design journey searching for whatever online resources I could find and what few books I have, making type without any real mentorship or critique. (I definitely don't recommend doing that.) This year, I've aimed to change that. I've already gotten a couple critiques on some of my projects and I've been relieved to find out that I can make typefaces of some quality, apparently. I still have a long way to go though.
I'm aiming to network with the larger type design community in general, which is one of the reasons I've joined TypeDrawers. I'm usually pretty bad at socializing, and I'm afraid I don't have much to say about type design given how significantly more experienced y'all are. But I'll give this forum a shot, and we'll see how it goes.
Also, I'm currently working towards releasing my first font. As you all are familiar with, preparing a font for retail is an insane amount of work, especially since I'm doing it all myself, on top of my plan to start my own foundry and build my own website.
If you're curious, here's what it looks like so far:
It also features alternates for programming (this is an older version):

I could spew more information about this typeface's origins, or the things I find most satisfying about type design, or what my future plans are, or what other families I'm working on. But this is already way longer than most introductions on here.

One last thing, I'm here for strictly talking about type design, and given the more professional nature of TypeDrawers I'm not going to bring my extreme silliness over here (I even made a profile pic just for TypeDrawers). But I'll leave you with one animated art piece that I think type nerds will have some appreciation for:

I’ve started with some literature on the topic, and I was glad to discover this community exists.

I’m also a hands-on learner, so I decided to create a font rendering engine from scratch as a way to deepen my knowledge. If anyone’s interested, I’d be happy to share my journey in a separate thread and hopefully get some advice from more experienced members.

I am Ruben Tarumian, a type designer from Yerevan (Armenia).

I have an architectural education, but after graduating from university I very quickly switched to type design. I have been creating fonts since the late 1980s. My initial goal was to expand the range of Armenian fonts, but in order to obtain complete, usable fonts, I also create Latin and often Cyrillic ranges. Moreover, often the graphic ideas of my fonts are formed on the basis of Armenian glyphs and then only transferred to the Latin and Cyrillic ranges (more often it happens the other way around :-)). I also study the history of writing: Armenian, and not only.
I would be interested in collaborating with other designers to create additional ranges. First of all, of course, Armenian, but also Cyrillic.
You can read about me on my website (in Armenian).

Howdy! Lurking typoholic here.

I work in academia. We often need to produce posters, worksheets, slide decks and other teaching/science communication materials, and some long-form technical writing here and there when all goes well. I have no formal training on the graphical side of things, but it's great fun - though I noticed that every project seems to start with hours of fiddling around looking for a shiny new typeface to try. And then inevitably the inferiors turn out a wee bit too small for formulae, or I'm missing a math symbol, or the tail on the /a is just a touch too wormy and now I can't unsee it and it bugs me... and it takes forever to tweak and twiddle and then set it all in double-spaced 12-point Times New Roman anyway because I have to.

I'm starting to think it may (almost) be more cost- and time-effective in the long run to make a font, one that would have the right kind of voice and also include all the less common glyphs I need. Even if I run out of steam and it doesn't end up being usable, I know I'll enjoy the process, and that's enough. Been reading through these forums for a few weeks now, especially through the type design critiques - it's fascinating to see a project take shape from the first sketches all the way to release in some of those threads. Karen Cheng's Designing Type second edition should be in the mailbox any day now. In the meantime though, I figured I'd muster some courage and say hello.

Hello,

I am hoping to find help understanding how to hint a font that I started work on a long time ago. The design is very simple and minimal. It is monospace, sans-serif, and all of the stem widths are the same. Every line is straight and at an angle of 0 degrees, 45 degrees, or 90 degrees. It is intended for use without grayscale or color antialiasing.

I recently put the work that I have done to date in a public GitHub repository here: https://github.com/pthomas505/fonts and the current iteration of the design is here: https://github.com/pthomas505/fonts/tree/main/fonts/family_name/monospace/size1/design_2.

I am attempting to do the hinting with TrueType, preferably on Linux, but I am also open to using Windows. I have played around with xgridfit and Microsoft Visual TrueType, and a long time ago with FontLab. The biggest difficulty that I am having is figuring out how to get the diagonal stem widths to match the horizontal and vertical stem widths as closely as mathematically possible at every point size.

Is this an appropriate place to look for assistance with this kind of question, or if not, could someone maybe point me to one that is?

Thank you kindly for your time.
I also designed around ten of my own typefaces. Sadly, after seven years, I took redundancy.

I loved working in the Type Studio (we still meet up in London twice a year) so the redundancy hit me hard and my enthusiasm nosedived. I stepped away from type design, intending to pick it up again in a year or two, and switched to graphic design instead.

However, for reasons I don’t even understand, I couldn’t reignite the spark. Apart from a few sporadic releases (which were unfinished designs left over from my Letraset days), I didn’t complete any new typefaces until 2019, when I released Rahare Sans on MyFonts.

I wrote an article explaining why I started again. Ditto, if you don’t want to read – essentially, I went through cancer twice and the experience shook me back into lettering and typefaces.

https://www.ulga-type.com/rahere-sans-typeface-cancer-experience.php

Since then I’ve released fourteen more designs and Rahere is growing into an eclectic superfamily. My new designs are a mixed bag: some are OK; others are a bit flaky. Realistically, I don’t think I can (or want to) ever fully escape from my Letraset-ephemeral-display-font mindset.

More importantly, I’m getting my groove back. On the downside, there are a few stumbling blocks:

Time: At the moment, I can only spend one or two days a week on type design and some evenings. I’m hoping to take some of my pension next year and that will give me an extra day.

Sales: They’re abysmal, literally non-existent. I realise that earning money from type design is a totally different beast these days – I’m still grappling with the changes in technology (OpenType, Variable fonts, AI, etc.) and the shifting industry landscape – plus there are so many good designs out there already. Releasing a new design feels like trying to get on a London tube carriage in rush hour when the doors are closing. No excuses though; I need to put some serious work into the marketing and business side.

Direction: I find myself at a crossroads. With the limited time I have, do I carry on expanding my library or do I pause for a while to concentrate on marketing/business skills and raising my profile?

As I shuffle along the path to old age, my ultimate aim is to have a small type foundry, releasing a modest output of display and text designs, mixed in with the occasional lettering project. I don’t have big ambitions, but I’d like to get off the bottom rung of the ladder if possible.

Thanks for reading (a bit longer than I planned).

Hello, my name is Richard, I live in The Netherlands and have been designing fonts since 2005. The whole project started by accident, sort of. A friend of mine had a website about architecture in Amsterdam in the first half of the twentieth century (known as The Amsterdam School). For that he used the Arnold Böcklin, a Jugendstil font. I complained about that choice and asked him why he didn't use an Amsterdam School font (from 1915 to about 1940). His simple reply was: I do not own such a font, do you have a font like that? No, I didn't, so I started from a word on a book cover with only 7 letters and expanded that to a complete alfabet.

I started working with FontCreator a product by High Logic. That went fairly well, until I got a new computer. I contacted the company to get a new activation code. But no, my name was not in their database, so they could not send me the code. Buy a new version of the program, was the advice. Two weeks later there was a mail from the company, highlighting their new version of the software. Wait, my name was no longer in the database? How come they send me this promotion then?

That was the moment I decided to switch to open source. From then on my fonts are made with Font Forge, where I learn new features almost every day. If you are interested in my work you may visit fontenwerkplaats.blogspot.com (texts mostly in Dutch).

Hello All! I'm a designer hailing from Minneapolis, Minnesota, making a mid-career transition. I escaped my toxic corporate job a couple years ago and am trying some new things. If there's one thing I got out of all the involuntary alone-time the past few years, it's that I want to pursue my one unfulfilled passion from my college days: type design. I've got a few typefaces in the works, both text and display fonts, and have recently had the privilege of receiving some expert guidance through the Type Crit Crew and Alphabettes Mentorship program.

I am also in the very early stages of starting two ventures that intersect with the type design and lettering worlds: psster.com and baldredhead.com. Psster gives me a chance to play around with many different styles of stencil lettering while engaging with important social issues and Bald Redhead Design Supply Co. will eventually sell some of my completed display fonts, in addition to a variety of stock art products.

Hi Community!

I'm usually one for reading all of the manuals, but I'm hoping the community might have a few generous experts that wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction for a project that fell into my lap at work.

I work at a software company and built a collection of icons for my team that we currently have as SVGs. A few weeks after sharing it with folks, I learned we also have a few people that are using icon fonts, so I'm trying to build an icon font they can use.

Fortunately (and hopefully not too overkill), I convinced my management to get a license of FontLab, so I have a great tool, but I'm so new to it that I'm having a hard time finding any good guidance/best practices on building an icon font. Things like setting up UPM, importing SVGs without distortion, editing SVG artwork, and supporting variations are on my radar.

Any help is very, very appreciated!

Hello everyone, I’m Steve, and from a young age I have been a fan of science fiction, and a lover of cyberpunk style aesthetics, including futuristic typography, logos and the likes.

In recent times I have designed several words and geometric elements in futuristic styles through creative play, all just for fun. Now I’m getting the urge to take it further and possibly create a typeface.

I did complete a course in graphic design a few years ago so have a little knowledge on the fundamentals of design but when it comes to creating fonts, I’m a complete novice! Due to my current beginner status, I’m hoping to gain some advice and direction from anyone here with any knowledge in this particular area of font design.

Admittedly I feel some of my questions may come across as amateur, so please go easy on me! Apologies in advance.

Where to start with this style of font design?

Any course, video, article, foundry recommendations would be appreciated.

Being a Mac user, I have looked into Glyphs App. Thoughts on whether this would be an appropriate application to use to create this style of font?

I’m contemplating enrolling on a typography course but unsure as to whether this would be beneficial to me, as numerous fonts in this style are experimental and sometimes break the boundaries of legibility. Therefore, general font design rules may not still apply.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

My highest-profile projects are the specialized music fonts Toccata and Fughetta (designed to work with the music software Finale); I was also hired by MakeMusic a bit over 20 years ago to design their (then) new music font Maestro, which is still shipped with Finale. I am mostly a musician, with a toe in the 3d-modeling world. My primary typographical occupation these days involves developing ambigrams (q.v.), but I do a little work with fonting as well.

Last year I bought FontLab7 and having been slowly building my abilities with it (and font design in general). I'm a big fan of early 1900s lettering (French and industrial American) - trademarks from the early 1900s are an absolute love of mine (but I also like Baseball scripts and fonts, punk rock fanzines, and death metal lettering). You can find some of my work on IG (@abenehrer). Anyways, just wanted to say hello first before asking questions or requesting critiques of my designs.

I'm now preparing it for publication as a book. I keep an eye on the 21st century too, and occasionally find time for a bit of amateurish type design. Thanks for having me!

Hello, I am Kedar. I am originally from India. Lived in the US for 10 years. And currently, I am in Canada.
I am a huge "typophile". Fonts and individual glyphs really captivate me. And the love for type also helps me with anxiety. Not a lot of people understand it, but trying to draw glyphs, even in in mid-air, gives me a sense of calm. Haha.
I recently published my first font to MyFonts 🎉 and I am currently working on a Devanagari (+Latin) open source font to be published on Google Fonts.
I am using GlyphsApp for type development. And I am learning the ropes as I develop. If anyone's looking for any help with type development, I would be happy to volunteer as I would be excited to learn under a professional umbrella.
Finally, a big HI 👋 to all the wonderful people here on TypeDrawers.
