In researching a page discussing the roots of the American view of the Middle East situation, I happened to run across a mention of the historical significance of the poem Lalla Rookh by Thomas Moore.

In searching for the work itself, I found a 1930 illustrated edition which was set in a beautiful typeface which I took to be some form of Jenson.

However, the shape of the capital W fairly shouted Garamond. Using Identifont, and going through the specific characteristics of several letters, I finally recieved the suggestion of Stempel Garamond. That the bowl of the capital P was not closed, as in Plantin, had made me feel that this was a typeface that could be distinguished in this way.

However, while a digitization that made the text bolder could make a Garamond look like a Jenson, the descenders of this typeface seem to me to be too short for Stempel Garamond. Perhaps it is some obscure attempt to harmonize Jenson with the demands of modern typography of that era.

Lately, I've been documenting the typography of Chicago's public transportation, namely the CTA ‘L’. I'm used to a certain amount of variability, but I've noticed this bizarre variation on Helvetica's /a that omits the signature curve on the upper bowl.

The only solid date I can provide is that the “Priority Seating” sticker is likely original from 1992-1994—when the train (3200 series, train #3264) was built. Was this a common modification?

Also, it really appears to me that the sticker and “These facilities for passengers only…” are just part of the font, while the “Rapid Transit” appears custom-made (note the differences between the two appearances of /a).

Instead of illustrating Updike’s examples with scans of reproductions from the book, Nicholas has tracked down literally hundreds of high-quality images of the actual specimens & books from online collections & archives and used those originals in place of Updike’s reproductions. Incredible.

Of even greater value, in my opinion: for many of the instances where Updike references additional works but did not provide any illustration (for practical reasons, no doubt), Nicholas has also tracked down those examples in online collections and provided supplemental links. A real service! and a labor of love.

I have a feeling I am going to be turning more often to this version, rather than turning around and reaching for the original volumes on my book shelf now.

Go check it out.

A few months ago a bookshelf collapsed in my studio and a pile of its contents sat on the floor for months. Finally going though them I found all of these keepsakes and memorabilia from past type conferences. Starting with Type87, the first one I ever attended. For a moment or two I marvelled at how many I had, and how long it had been since I looked at any of them. At first I thought I should hold on to them, but then realized none of it was interesting or important to me anymore. So I threw it all away. I feel so much better now.

I'm curious about the appearance of bumps or other decorations halfway up the stems of type. David Shields calls them medial or midstem decorations and notes them in the context of wood types in the Tuscan style. They are exploited in a good number of chromatic wood types. Other features of Tuscan style like bifurcated serifs can be traced many centuries back in writing, but I wonder what precedents there are (in writing, type, or other lettering) for the medial decorations.

Here's a Figgins specimen from the 1st half of the 19c showing medial ornament independent of "Tuscan" style:

Are there earlier types like this?
Hi everyone,

A short while ago I discovered FF Balance by Evert Bloemsma and I've become a bit obsessed. As someone relatively new to type... it sort of shocked me. It seems to break so many "rules" while still functioning fairly well as a text face. What a terrible loss that Bloemsma is no longer with us.

I've since spent considerable time digging around for any information – Bloemsma is discussed in Middendorp's Dutch Type, but aside from that there isn't a whole lot – a few articles here and there, including an essay by Bloemsma in Letters: een bloemlezing over typografie (which I actually purchased and Google Translated) and an interview in 5pts. published buy Underware.

There was apparently a specimen:

https://www.behance.net/gallery/7809479/FF-Balance-specimen

... which I'd love to get a better look at, but I wouldn't know where to begin searching for such a thing.

So I'm asking the community here: has anyone have any more information about this? Does anyone know where I could get a more thorough look at the text of the specimen? I wonder if there's archival material regarding the typeface's development – might someone have access to it? Maybe it's in a library somewhere?

Hi there,

I’ve been trying to find out whether the logotype used by this artist by the end of the 1950s and in the 1960s, Heinz Mack, is a handdrawn logotype or typeset, and if it’s the latter, which font has been used.

Does anyone recognize the exact typeface here?

https://emuseum.duesseldorf.de/internal/media/dispatcher/164215/full

The MACK logotype was used throughout multiple print media and in different sizes, all with otherwise different typefaces (mostly Futura), and occasionally on the windows of galleries etc. It wouldn’t be too difficult to draw this; then again, it looks oddly familiar with the small counter, low bar of the /A, and missing overshoot of the /C, like it was meant to be typeset in large sizes with no line spacing.

I tried my books as well as whatfontis, whatthefont, and identifont to find an exact match, all to no avail.

Edit: If it was a logotype and not typeset, how would it have been realized in different media during that period? They wouldn’t have cast this in lead or cut in wood for printing, would they? For the windows, a skilled signpainter probably copied it from the printed original—or was there another technique available during that time?

As most of those I am acquainted with probably know, athough I never stopped being involved and passionate about it, de facto I have been away from actual typeface design for some years.

Now I have decided to resume (or at least to try to) work on typefaces, with a certain continuity, despite the limitations of time and due to family reasons.

This goes both for digital versions of lead typefaces which I am interested in and for my own designs, of course little by little, and taking all the time needed.

For a start, and to warm up again in drawing letter forms carefully, I’ve been cultivating interest in digital versions of lead typefaces I would like to use myself. Especially american typefaces from the late nineteenth century, in particular in the vein derived and/or related to Gustave F. Schroeder’s De Vinne.

Now, to the point: besides gathering further type specimens, I would need to contextualize the history of these typefaces and the historical unfolding of the foundries which released them. I have seen there are a few resources providing historical information on them, but I would like to ask to the experts here which would be the most accurate (but also concise, as I am not doing a proper research to write about them, just to understand better their spirit in context) source for this kind of research.

I am interested in particular in John F. Cumming’s Howland and in the whole De Vinne family (and derivates).

For example, I see that apparently Howland was released in 1892, before being incorporated in ATF's catalog. But De Vinne’s patent is from 1893, so I believe it’s unlikely as Howland apparently was designed as an alternative to De Vinne Condensed as a titling face. Is there further information on this?

Many thanks in advance. Any contribution, even minimal, will be greatly appreciated. And if I can reciprocate in some way, I'll be happy to do so. :-)

Hello,
I got sent a number of images from the Movie "The hunt for Red October" with the duty to identify them. I think I was almost able, but the CIA font and the font of the title presented some trouble for me. it was custom made to "appear Soviet" and the design spawned a variety of fonts.
The CIA font I have seen it or something similar in many movies, but I have no clue what it is.

As I am more of a font designer than a font "detective", I don't know the proper procedures to process such requests from clients. Are type designers also expected to be professional type historians? Not where I'm at. Is there a specialized place on the web, or a bureau that can help me with similar future requests by clients? Or does one simply post the materials on general type boards and the like and wait for proper response? Currently I'm using WhatTheFont.

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for type specimens that have crossword puzzles like this one example I found in Vu journal. It's a grotesque san-serif, having quite a distinct style. It's likely not letterings since the forms are quite consistent. But I'm still not sure if these comes from metal types.

About the source: Vu is a French journal around the middle of 20th century (1928-1940) so the specimens could be around the same period or before, highly possibly coming from a French type foundry like Deberny & Peignot.

I wonder if anyone already stumble upon specimen with letters like this. Could be any source from around the world. Not even type specimens. Just things you see the resemblance are nice to examine too.

Thank you all!

What fonts get the most eyeballs, daily, in 2024? Obviously it's impossible to answer this question conclusively, but surely we can make an educated guess based on the popularity of certain technologies/platforms used for setting type (for screen, print, or something else).

Within the bounds of Latin fonts (I'm not familiar enough with other scripts, but I'd love to hear from people who are), here are a few that I imagine must be "up there" in terms of daily views:

Helvetica
Arial
Univers
Times
Gill Sans
SF Pro
Roboto
Georgia
Verdana

What do you think?
