Hello everyone, this is my first post and also my first variable typeface project.

The design was born from a client's branding project that I later developed into a custom typeface.

The client is a well-established running brand and retailer in Rome, Italy, and the identity/typeface suggests the intersection of individual paths, hence the "softness" of the curves.

The family is designed to cover multiple weights, from ExtraLight to Black.

I'd love to hear your technical feedback, as I'm self-taught in the world of variable typeface design and this is my first real approach to type design.

Any thoughts are welcome, thank you!

Hello Everyone,

This post is a request for any feedback, particularly on technical aspects vs stylistical, of a typeface recently re-migrated from Metafont sources. Our goal has been to maintain the unique style and spirit of the original design while cleaning up some obvious shortcomings of the contours that resulted from the conversion process. The release can be found here:

https://github.com/raeytype/ethiop/releases/tag/v1.0.0-beta-1

with more detail on the project page: https://github.com/raeytype/ethiop

Briefly on the background: The "ethiop" LaTeX + Babel package, and accompanying typeface, was released in 1998 as a product of the graduate work of Dr. Berhanu Beyene. The Metafont files were ported by another team in 2002 and were incorporated into the GNU FreeSerif typeface. As a GNU product, the typeface became widely used. An eventual goal of the effort is to offer the enhancements back to the GNU project for a revision of the FreeSerif font.

Below is a sample of the enhancements made. Remarks on best practices to follow that will help improve quality and portability are much appreciated.

I'm new to the world of type design, but I've been designing watches for some time. I've frequently modified existing fonts to fit well on a watch dial (normally redrawing the 4's, 6's and 9's) and redrawing numerals from historic watches for modern dials.

My latest design involved creating a full set of numerals from scratch. The numerals are inspired by many mid-century watch dials. I like the flat sides and rounded curves of the numbers and the tiny micro serifs like a copperplate.

I felt the combination of sharp and round would translate well into a typeface. So I decided to take the leap and build the rest of the typeface.

As I'm new to this, it'll start as a single-weight display font for marketing, etc. I would like to make a thinner weight eventually, but I need to walk before I can run.

I've been working in Glyphs to build out the font. I've done the alphabet in upper and lowercase. I'm quite happy with the uppercase, but I've struggled to bring the same elegance to the lowercase. In particular, the /a/e/g/f/s/t/ don't feel right, I think I like the /b/d/p/q/ and the /m/n/u/r/.

I've not got all the spacing right yet and haven't started kerning pairs. I'm just focusing on getting the forms right first.

I'd love any criticism or advice on how to proceed.

Hi to everyone.

I've been working on a sans display font that I really like, but there’s one thing that keeps bothering me about sans-serif fonts, the diagonal glyphs. No matter what I do, the diagonals always look heavier in color compared to the straight glyphs.

I would truly appreciate any feedback you have about the overall design of the font. This is also my first time designing punctuation, so I’d really appreciate any thoughts or suggestions regarding that as well.

The PDF proof is attached.

Have a good one folks.

This time, I wanted to make as many changes as possible before asking for your help, so that, you know, I can be confident with myself and test my skills and knowledge .

Brief

This is MARKESSA, a client's small business looking to sell beauty and cosmetics products.

I made MitraMono monospace Bengali font in 2002 in 3 days with 3 objectives

1) Make a Bengali font with both unicode and ISCII encoding for Bengali , as I needed it to test my ISCII-Unicode convertor

2) Make it similar to Mangal, the only indic font supplied with Microsoft Volt as a sample, as far as structure and open type tables are concerned. I also thought as Mangal in going to be an UI font, it will be better legible in smaller points if my font also had a similar design.

3) Make it monospace, so that it can be used to view plain text file in internet explorer, the only app that supported uniscribe in Windows 98. IE would not accept a non-monospaced font for showing plain text files.

Due to the haste, my poor drawing skill and total inexperience in making fonts, the font made was of very poor quality, with headlines not aligning, contours in different direction overlapping leading to white spaces. Moreover making varying sizes of Bengali Characters in same width led to varying width of stems, giving an ugly look. I never thought it would be of use to anyone else. However it found an unintended use. It was the only font that could show Bengali characters in Xterm. That's why my friends of Bengali Linux Localisation project uploaded the font to Debian Linux archive and is present there since then as part of Bengali font package.

Now when I look at the font, I find that despite its many shortcomings. it has got an old world charm of Bengali Typewriter and Metal press Bengali newspapers of mid 70's due to its use of horizontal components instead of vertically stacked conjuncts and non overlapping vowel marks. I plan to revive the font with alignment of toplines, harmonisation of stems, removing overlaps, correct directions of contours, create a lighter version and if possible make it variable. I also plan to replace the non matching Latin Glyphs taken from GNU Unifont with a matching style latin glyphs. Any suggestion and critique in my design decision is widely welcome.

Hi! Here to make my random reappearance.

I’m currently coding a web portfolio (as a musician) using MD IO as the heading font. I’ve admired Covik Sans Mono and its use of a three-width system, and wanted to use it as the body font, but I felt it had too strong of a character as a pairing. Since this is a pretty niche category, I thought it would be interesting to take a crack at it using specimens of metal type Helvetica as a base, since I’m pretty bad at designing fonts otherwise. (Side note: I did discover Fragment Mono, but the texture looked unpleasant with the increased x-height in my opinion.)

I just started this yesterday, so any feedback would be much appreciated!

I'm working on a typeface inspired by Broadway and Bifur. Both these classics have some lovely design qualities that I wanted to see combined: Bifur’s unweilding geometric discipline married with Broadway’s high contrast and (more) legible letterforms. I was also curious to see how far the contrast could be pushed. For the sake of simplicity this has remained an all caps typeface.

I could see this being used anywhere from restaurant signage to cocktail menus. It’s not meant for paragraphs of text. A lower contrast companion may be helpful, but I don't want the design to lose its personality. Here are a couple glyphs that show what I mean.

As an experiment, I've testing how the letterforms work when applied to other scripts—Cyrillic and Greek. I have zero experience designing for these scripts though so the design is likely full of flaws. While looking for reference of Bifur and Broadway I couldn't locate any signs that they ever received a Greek or Cyrillic expansion. Does anyone know otherwise? It seems overall that non-Latin scripts have very little when it comes to this type style.

I made my first AI experiment.

I wanted to explore if it was possible to create new alphabets by providing only the Art Direction, while leaving the Execution to the computer.

In this particular experiment, my goal was to generate cool, exciting and original display alphabets, that's why you won't see any highly readable but also boring sans of serif typeface for body or paragraphs text usage. In fact, they were intentionally avoided. For example: getting results looking like Arial or Times New Roman would have been seen as epic fails.

Basically, I wanted to test if it was possible to create alphabets that will feel at home if included in the Dan Solo catalogues, so to speak.

I think all of the results I got on this experiment have a high degree of the Wow factor in it!
What do you think?

In total I created 20 alphabets. you can download them all at https://github.com/impallari/AlphabetMagic

A different experiment can be done to produce highly readable sans or serifs too, that's not a problem (in fact its actually easier). Or Formal Scripts or Blackletters, Colorfonts, Non-Latin, or whatever is needed.

<img alt=""
Hello there!

I've been having a blast working on my first font, but I would appreciate opinions from some fresh eyes. Overall I'm really happy with it, but it being my first stab at type design, feel free to open my eyes to my inexperience!

A couple of things I'm running into:

I've been playing around with two lowercase b/d/p/q versions, part of me wants to go with the lowest quick brown fox version below to connect more to their uppercase counterparts, but in lowercase I feel like those letters just want to be curved with an overshoot... I go back and forth

I'm also struggling to know what level of optical corrections to make between the uppercase and lowercase glyphs. Sometimes the lowercases feel too bold. Sometimes they feel just fine.

PDF proof also attached. Still just working on letterforms, I set side bearings but haven't gotten to kerning yet.

Thank you for your time!!

I noticed this unusual trend of pairing different language fonts, but with the primar goal to pair other language typefaces with Latin script. It is mostly done by pairing visual structure of Arabic with Latin.

As it is not enough that Arabic is already downgraded to a quasi-Arabic, which was made with trying to produce Arabic script in the way Latin movable type works, now in the addition, they are making it even more Latin with an excuse of a visual harmony.

It is the amount of nonsense, as in the case when you would try to pair Gothic Fraktur with Helvetica, or Penmanship cursive with Graffiti tags style. You can play and continue with multiple nonsense combinations like this.

Harmonizing text in the way with pairing visualy compatible scripts is an another story, but this imperialistic tendencies are really going too far.

For the Arabic users there, I would just say, admit that you hate yourself and your heritage and just start using Latin script or Arabizi, but leave the Arabic script alone. If you are so lazy to understand that you don't know anything about your own language, don't pretend you care. Almost every Arabic typeface designer outthere is a delusional person, thinking doing something professional or beneficial. It's like on the AA meeting. You first need to admit that you have a problem, and than to start with the treatment.

Life is short to cudle your ego. Latin script designers are not so far away, still living in the reference to the movable type era, but at least they didn't masacre the script so much. For sure they are not trying to "harmonize" it with Chinese, Arabic or Hindu.

Let us awake from this nightmare and start changing the world.

Here’s something I have been working on for a while, it started out as a (fairly) faithful rendition of the film titles but I found it to be too crude to work as a font. So this is my third rework that I am finally happy with, although it has veered off a fair bit from the original but I think it looks much better.

Hi there! This is my first post on Typedrawers

I'm Carlos Ávila a graphic designer from Colombia who is trying to begin a typeface designer career after finishing my master's degree in Typography. I'm here to ask you some advices about how to build a type design portfolio. Here's some background about:

For some time now I've been building my portfolio as a Type Designer. I've tried sending applications to a few foundries and agencies. Sometimes they respond and sometimes they don't, but when I've heard back from them, I've received many praises that are not usually reflected in work collaborations. For hybrid calls I understand that I'm at Sudamérica, and a local candidate may be more attractive for the position and I'm sure that we the remote candidates have to extra-stands out with our work (and that's what I'm trying to).

As a beginner Type Designer I think I don't have the experience or confidende enough to build a website. Currently my portfolio is a 22 pages PDF showing both personal (mainly WIP's) and professional work which are around three projects. I'm letting 2 pages by project, even the real work ones with only one exception (the biggest project I've worked on so far. This one have only 3 pages long). The number of pages per project is trying to keep the file from being too extensive.

The selection of works is the one I think is the best for it, I put there those projects where I know I show my best drawing skills and own vision about type design. But there's something I know is a lack in my portfolio: showing process, handmade sketches or early stages of the letters. The reason of it I think is the fear to not show some well finished and add more pages to the PDF file :c

I'd like to receive some advices out of your experiences both when you begun and now as professionals or even if you are recruiters in foundries or agencies.

What do you take into account selecting/looking for type designers?

What do you take into account when you work with type designers?

How did you do at the beginning of your type design career?

Thanks in advance, I'll appreciate all your takes about this issue very important to me on this days.

Bests from Colombia!

PD: Here's my IG if you want to keep in touch:
https://www.instagram.com/ce.jota/

A long time ago (2010) I have started a new typeface written in METAFONT (see http://www.typophile.com/node/73827). I interrupted the work because I had to investigate further in METAFONT and parametric type design (e.g. https//www.tug.org/TUGboat/tb37-3/tb117romer.pdf or https://tug.org/TUGboat/tb35-1/tb109romer.pdf or http://typedrawers.com/discussion/2342/funtauna-rectangular-slab-serif).
But I have never abandoned the original project and have always been working from time to time for this typeface. Taking the updated METAFONT sources, I have produced some master fonts. At the moment, work is concentrated on 2 of them: The display face and the tiny face.

<img alt="" src="https://us.v-cdn.net/5019405/uploads/editor/2x/raal2ge315eu.png" title="Image: I call Elemaints) is the use in scientific texts. The glyph forms are mainly based on french renaissance antiquas like Sabon or Albertina. The x-height is equal to the x-height of Times New Roman. The proportions are very similar to Minion. Therefore, the look of Elemaints may resemble Minion, altough every single glyph was constructed freshly. One intended difference to other french renaissance antiquas may be the serifs, which always end rectangular:

Elemaints is not meant to be a revolution but a free antiqua with optical sizes for scientific texts.

Any suggestions (except kerning, which is not done yet) are welcome (glyph shapes, proportions, rhythm, details, spacing, ...).

Hello everyone! Long time lurker here. As I work on my first typeface I figure I’ll introduce myself a bit and look for some critique on my first typeface.

I’m a 19yo type enthusiast from Hong Kong who got no graphic design background but get into the whole typography thing anyway. After reading quite some books and stuff about typography and type design I’ve decided to give it a go. I know many actually advocate to draw something more interesting at start but let’s say I start the project purely for studying how to draw a standard text face. The goal is to get familiarize the process and get better sense of how the letters relate to each other.

The inspiration of the typeface comes from a novel I read not long ago. You could say it’s an imaginative project in which I draw a book face to re-set the novel (although it turn out to be maybe a bit serious? Still long way to go before I can grasp the sensational aspect of type apparently). Following is a long-ish description of the from concept to execution, in case it help with the critique or some other beginners are interested.

Concept

First I look for reference, something that has the literary quality of old style type but feels more rigor, sharp and self-assured. I look at different Dutch old style type from van den Keere to Caslon and finally settled on Fell type English roman as it fit the qualities that I’m looking for. (Plus there are extra high-res scan available on Kris Sowersby’s Flickr album and let me try my hand on a quasi-revival)

Lowercase

I started with the lowercase. I would say it’s reasonably close to the reference. I want to capture the moderately high contrast and dark appearance of Fell type. It should feel sharp in analogue way rather than digital, with reasonably sharp terminals and joints. I also kept the modulated proportion and closely-packed verticals. The serif is long and sharp as I want the characters to anchor on the line.

k, v, w, x, y: I like the narrow v and w in the reference so I extend that to other characters. Though they does feel a bit small so I increase the overshoot slightly. I try no to slavishly copy all the quirks of the reference, although give my amateurishness that’s likely the case.

h, n, m: Also on narrow side. Shoulder ever-so-slightly rounder than the reference, something I pull from other Fell type. There are quite pronounced join height different between h/n/m and b/d/p/q in the reference. I temper it slightly but keep some as feature.

a, c, f, g, j, r, y: Just a slight bit of sharpness and thrust added to the terminals. I don’t want them to feel inky.

s: Remove the backslant in the original.

Uppercase

Then I start drawing the uppercase. I didn’t stick to the English roman but also looked at other Fell roman and probably some Kis/Caslon, something less modulated in width. Keeping the uppercase and lowercase coherent is what I found the most challenging. Originally I let the thick, thin strokes and terminals be optically thicker and continue to draw the whole set of caps, only to find the sharpness and the literary quality of lowercase didn’t transfer at all. Then I take reference at other fonts and realize it maybe a valid approach to keep the hairline and terminals almost as sharp as lowercase. (one precedent being Hoefler Text). (This is also the time I realize that I might’ve underestimate the sharpness of many Renaissance typefaces. Typefaces like Galliard and Requiem are laser-sharp, much more than what I’ve drawn. Though I find the pragmatic texture quite likeable so I kept it this way.)

B, D, P, R: I borrow from Granjon the way the bowl start decending immediately. They give the subtle swashness that match the lowercase (I think).

C, G: surprisingly difficult to get right. The stress is quite tilted so that the tension feel coherent to the O. The almost overbite and the beak of the G is something I adore from the Fell type French Canon.

E: I refrained from making the bar modulated as that would be too dynamic. The brackets balance between stately and dynamic.

Numeral

I do admit my knowledge to numeral (especially old style) is close to none. I basically let my intuition guide me. (For example: how spaced out should they be so that it feel like reading them one by one while keeping them coherent; how long should the extenders be compare to lowercase) As I look at them right now they are probably not terrible, but it’s not like I know how to judge.

Spacing

I spent quite some time in spacing by actually using the font in browser (via the amazing Type-X) and smooth out stuffs that creates blobs. Lowercase should be fine (hopefully) but I haven’t been able to make the uppercase very smooth: the classic issue in which HH and HO feel alright but OO on the tight side. (I know many font actually apply positive kerning for OO pairs but I’m not sure if I want to use that for basic spacing. Of course I haven’t kern anything at this stage.)

I’m trying to figure the italic out but if the roman is bad there’s no point for that, so I figure I’ll figure out what problems it got in the roman first. Thanks in advance!

Greetings All,

I've been fortunate to have had the opportunity to interact with a number of young, up-and-coming, graphic artists who have created some fantastic typefaces for the Ethiopic script. They are self-taught in using font tools and while they are great artists, they may be unaware of technical aspects that impact the visual quality of the typeface on various platforms and devices (awareness that I also lack).

Is there a type design organization or interested individuals that I could direct them to, who could offer a technical review of their fonts and advise them on areas to address?

In some cases, the fonts are a commercial product, and a small review fee could be offered. In other cases, the font is an OFL offering, a labour of love, and the review would have to be on a volunteer basis.

thanks!

So I have only started on my type design journey and after doing the Viktor Baltus course I had a couple of friends ask me if I could take a piece of lettering I did recently and turn it into a display font.

As I worked to expand and evolve it, I was inspired by cassette futurism, Y2K, and cyberpunk. Movies like Blade Runner, Alien, Star Wars (especially the ligatures within the logo), as well as games like Wipeout (and the designers republic as a whole) were also some of my inspirations.

This in turn evolved into the font on the pdf. The key concept to me was that the sans serif should look as connected as possible, a kind of sans script.

The circles in the an and e came about when I noticed an issue with my æ, as the old a made glyph look like œ). This I in turn carried into the s.

Though some legibility problems remain. One suggestion I got was to include ink traps (which made it look even more like the wipeout logo).

Which I think works and also serves to make each letter in the ligatures more recognisable. Though I am not sure how much I need to taper them atm.

I apologise if this post seems rambling with lots of disconnected questions. I am very new to this, and any advice would be amazing.

P.S. The weird glyphs in the pdf are Galactic Standard from the Commander Keen games. It was a stylistic alternate I wanted to include.

Hello! After a good few years silently lurking this forum, I suddenly feel ready to make some noise.

This typeface has gone through many incarnations before now resembling my version of Futura. I doubled down on the features I like from the face (capitals with Roman proportions, the vertically sliced terminals of the /C) and replaced those I wasn’t as fond of (the single-story /a and small x-height). I’ve perhaps even made a world’s first with my /@ of which I’m very proud.

I may use it elsewhere as it develops, but it’s main use for the time being will be to set body copy on my website.

There are still some inconsistencies in weight which I must address, but rather than poke and prod endlessly at my own whims, I figured a few extra sets of eyes on her wouldn’t hurt.

I’d appreciate any and all advice—thank you in advance!

As I posted on Typophile, this Monday I had a sudden impulse to doodle an exaggerated light, contrasted, space-taking Garalde with impossibly tiny counters, long extenders and no respect for long amounts of text or small sizes.

I've started implementing it in Glyphs, and I'm having way too much fun doing it.

I'm toying with the name "Paramond", hinting to its Garalde genome and its delusions of grandeur. Where other fonts may be touted as workhorses, this one would be the unicorn.

I'm not using any one form of Garamond, whether historical or recent, as a reference. I drew most characters from scratch, based on my mental image of what garaldes look like, and tweaked them until I liked them. When I run into trouble (for instance, that /f was a tough cookie, and I'm still not too satisfied with it), I open a page of garaldes on MyFonts and skim over them to get a general impression of the existing solutions without getting too attached to a single one.

What do you think so far?

A few years ago, I was first hit by the creative urge to make a faithful sans companion to Garamond — not just another humanist sans tipping its hat to the old master, but a sans that really was Garamond. I was going to distill the pure essence of Garamond. Unfortunately, my skills weren't up to the task back then (Typophile veterans might remember).

Now, after completing a display Garamond (Cormorant) and a sans (Quinoa), I feel confident enough to try again.

My current plan is to start with a low-contrast family that starts with the monolinear «essence» for large display sizes on the light end of the spectrum grows into a robust text-capable workhorse at heavier weights. I'm working with these two masters — Hairline and Bold — and adding a third, intermediate master via the brace trick in Glyphs wherever necessary (for instance, to restrict the strong thinning of shoulders to the heavy weights).

Beyond that, my stretch goals are:

An Italic.

A high-contrast family branching off the same Hairline master, but with a new Bold master. First experiments (see below) seem promising.

Adobe Latin 4 and Cyrillic coverage.

If I can pull it off, a third master (Black) for heavy weights beyond Bold. Not sure if the æsthetics of the essence would survive that ordeal, though.

Now, since I will base this project off the existing chassis of Cormorant, I am bound by contract to release this typeface under the Open Font License as well. Unfortunately, Google Fonts has apparently spent all its budget for commissioning new typefaces this year, so I can't get funding through that channel anytime soon.

Dave has suggested getting some crowdfunding from Kickstarter, though. Do you think that could work? It has worked for other typefaces in the past... (Though from what I can see, the successful projects are significantly smaller in financial scope than what Google pays...) Do you have any experiences with Kickstarter yourself? Can you recommend it?
