  • Hmm. I have hesitations about font as art/design being copyright protected. At some level, I just see it as possibly being abused by, well, any person or the court. While I can appreciate some design difference between the Garmonds (for instance), …
  • Beau Williamson said: Oh, now I want to kern all my tildes. Wavy line is great. So why not make an alternate for the hyphen. Use the tilde outline and set it to overlap? Then add it into an aalt, stylistic set, etc.
  • Most of my income comes from layout work and so the below is really from that perspective. It is a must that I retain the font versions used in the production of said work. (A new version can cause reflow, line spacing issues, etc.) Even if I was s…
  • Thanks, Mark. And as a side note, the Fall Creator's Update (Windows) also ships with a variable font. It's a DIN-alike font.
  • Illustrator is one of the worse applications to open a pdf with. It doesn't release the multitude of clipping masks inherent in a pdf, it flattens multilayer pdfs to a single layer, and the list goes on. But I do agree with all the PS stuff.
  • Many thanks, Vasil!
  • Our office primarily used Windows in the 1990s. We had a clipboard application installed on all the computers that was network aware. Items (including files) could be set for one user or all users to see at the time of copy. It was a right-click c…
  • It'll likely only support what AD does currently.
  • Too bad for them. I think it would have done decent for the upcoming holiday at least.  When it does find a "home," please let me know.
  • Yes, AD is a rough Illy replacement. Serif will be releasing Affinity Publisher to beta at some point in the future (in theory before year's end...but they've been down this road before and it has slipped considerably). That is the layout applica…
  • No worries! Fwiw, I took it as a bit of exasperation over the situation.  Please, at least for my part, when/if MF does end up approving your application or you use CM in the interim, update the thread. Or send me a private message of its availabil…
  • That's a pity. With Halloween approaching in the US, I could see reasonable sales of the beastie font. I would have purchased it. How about a release on Creative Market? Doesn't preclude selling on MF in the future.
  • I like the last rendition. As for the s swoosh, I would certainly want it available at least in a stylistic set and/or as a character varient. I don't believe it should be the normal s. I'm a sucker for nice Latin script fonts. I would likely buy i…
  • The OTF has no features in it.
  • I've never bought fonts because of either online testing or trial licenses. Neither has a cut-down version nor a free style been an inducement. I purchase fonts either because the job dictates it or because I like the shape and glyph coverage I desi…
  • Does Writer require the silly tag codes for ligs? If so, are you using it?
  • I don't think not testing in WordPad is as much a fault as only testing in Adobe applications and I know several designers that if they test in anything else consider their fonts "proper" if they work in them and not so well in non-Adobe application…
  • That was written slightly tongue in cheek. As was the word, slightly.  It is true I don't see the point. And it is true that I in no way see WordPad as a standard to check fonts with.  I will, and do, use Word when testing. Even so, it isn't the 1…
  • James Puckett said: Mike, I was asking type designers to test their own fonts, not fonts people have bought. And Wordpad is generally used as the benchmark for QA on Windows. If it doesn’t work in Wordpad, it’s probably not going to work in mo…
  • People actually use WordPad? Sorry. I would be happy to test. But have no idea what tool is used on what fonts. I think Mark S. uses Glyphs and I own a few of his fonts, but I suspect they are old enough (like my copy of Coquette) that it was an ol…
  • If I had to pick a major player's site, it would be MyFonts. Though I don't like that they changed the site to always default to showing image tiles, it is the easiest to browse, navigate and purchase from for me. That said, I prefer simpler sites.…
  • Both Laura and Emily are at the top of my favorites in this genre. Own several from of both of them (more of Laura's).  For purely drawn delight, I believe Laura's nudges out Emily's of my top spot.
  • What does "rasterized vector" mean? A plain reading would indicate that a print pdf could not contain the vector font information.
  • The number of kerning pairs in a TTF is limited to 10,920 and if you have classes with pairs that exceed that number, then FL will truncate (If I recall properly) to that number. But your classes/pairs could exceed that number and will be fully expo…
  • Yes, looking at the new screen shot, I do like the step in weights better, Arne! If anything, I might play with ramping up the regular very little. That would provide a bit more contrast to the light all the while evening out the transition to the …
  • Or, the current bold could be a semi-bold, the current extra as is becomes the bold, then interpolate a style between the current Extra and Ultra for a new Extra-Bold... I personally like the light and regular. I think oft times people's regulars a…
  • AbrahamLee said:... @Mike Wenzloff: Thanks for the pointer to Affinity Designer. I'll look into that. Do many folks here use it? I've considered getting it myself. It looks really nice, but it would have to be so much easier for me to use than Ink…
  • I think the rand feature is OK. Seemingly poor application support. I think that, for myself, I would only really have the feature on in a drawing application such as AD if doing certain types of design work. Even then I don't know if I would use th…
  • Thanks for the correction, John.  Other than testing, I guess I hadn't ever turned the feature on/off and paid any close attention. So this is what I get in AD. Feature on, feature off, feature back on. The font was one that Erwin prepared using…
  • Not deprecated.  There is latitude in the spec for stepping through the alternates or seeding the alternates assigning numbers to them and what not. I believe Serif did the easiest with stepping through them. But once the glyph swap has occurred,…
