  • @Arne Freytag sorry never got back to you, yeah I'm considering increasing it but for the moment I'm just trying to finish what I initially had in mind for the design and see how it goes. Upping the xheight would drastically change the design so sav…
  • @Matthew Smith Thanks for the feedback! I made some changes to A and the tittle. Let me know if this works. I dropped the xheight for 'i' a tad bit to accommodate more of the tittle. Given the general x-height I've set for the typeface is slightly h…
  • Update on the letters. I'd like to get some feedback from you guys before I continue any further. I'm kinda slow on this now so I've got only a few letters done. Just a brief idea of what I did and why. Going by the numerals I should've stuck to a r…
  • Been following this process for awhile, looking pretty sweet dude. Can't even image the kinda patience you need to draw stuff like this specially if you have to make it into a typeface. Just one thing though I noticed that could use some tweaking is…
  • @John Hudson I agree but while designing some of the letters I kinda salvaged it. I'll update soon so I can hear yours and everyone else's thoughts on that. Thanks for the feedback!
  • @Craig Eliason ooh okay. Let me know if this one works. Just FYI though. The rules I had in place for the design was to only pair a small hook to the large teardrop  and not a large and large together so what I did here with 3 & 5 kinda break…
  • @James Puckett thanks! I've decided to do the letters too. For the serif I did match them like you said at the initial stages of the design but I thought it made 4 look a little less in weight like it was hanging by a thread while the other numbers …
  • @Jasper de Waard  Yeah if I have the patience for it there might be letters too hah. Thanks for the feedback! @Craig Eliason Yeah I do have an alt.9 with a serif like that to address spacing issues because some of the ones facing each other bump in…
  • Ooh very cool. I used this very idea for some cursive lettering awhile back. Looks even better  for a sans serif, dunno why I never thought of it. I think it's expected where you'll run into issues with letters like A,M which may look slightly diffe…
  • I feel 'S' should be something like [this], it's also slightly wider as it should be and you also get to keep slabs horizontal instead of vertical. Not sure about D though but I threw an example for D in there as well. What you have for D is right b…
  • Actually for ball terminals, teardrops and the like a stub nib would be more fitting even for Wes' example and slightly more calligraphic without the need to fill in/draw. @Mark Simonson, he might be using a pointed pen but he's actually 'filling' i…
  • haha sorry couldn't resist posting this meme, buzzfeed in a nutshell
  • From what I learnt about this it had to do with hinting. The glyphs app had an old article about the do's and don'ts and if I remember correctly it specifically mentioned about helping rasterizers. How it helps the rasterizer it didn't explain but t…
  • @David Vereschagin the popup should allow you to click 'not now' at the bottom and it should go away. Worked for me all this time. If it's like an annoying forced popup that won't go away like you see on pinterest, might need adblock or something al…
  • I think in the original specimen there are ink traps? You can sort of tell by the aliasing. I marked it out for one of the glyphs, [example] and for some others like [this one] it has a  rounded corner.
  • @David Vereschagin the link I mentioned has the videos but for some reason it doesn't list it unless you change it to 'oldest first' or you can click 'videos' listed on the side. I think they should move it to youtube for ease of use.
  • Their facebook page has a few videos [link]. I've gone through some of them but I wish there were more and slightly more in-depth and on a somewhat regular basis.
  • HLMUV look super weird and out of place. Also something off topic, can we  have a like button? agree just makes no sense here since there's no question or context, even if there was sometimes I feel like I just wanna like the work and move on with m…

  • Yeah I think it was livetraced based off an original crayon drawing and then roughen or tweak was used.
  • I've run into this issue numerous times and still do. What I've learnt is it helps to have some degree of skill to see this by merely eyeballing but more importantly training your eye to see it by studying material is even better. I think if you did…
  • @Craig Eliason Sorry man but holy smokes that g looks horrible specially for that sort of raised UV printing.
  • @Beau Williamson  I'd get a second opinion in here though from the more experienced folks just to be sure of some of the things I said and some of the stuff I missed. Cheers!
  • I'm sure there are others in here who could help you out more with their extensive experience but here's some of what I think looks weird and maybe even wrong to some extent. Regular version stem width for lc is thicker than the lc italic version. '…
  • Dude! Never would've thought a fellow mallu would walk into this place! So yeah I've heard of malayalam. Your english is fine bud. You've come to the right place to clarify this but if you don't follow some of what they say then contact Shiva Nallap…
  • I'm with @Michael Clark on this. Much of this confusion I think comes from some of the lettering legends like Tony Di Spigna and the whole Lubalin gang calling it spencerian. Being a huge fan of Tony Di Spigna's work, a lot of his work is actually p…
  • I think it's only fair the author is present to explain why they did what they did if their work is up for critique but sometimes these things are out of your control and so here we are. That whole sans serif coupled with serifs is an interesting ef…

  • Broad edge is chisel tipped. I mean yeah you could sort of get close to something that looks like a sans serif with 0 contrast, but it's something of a hack really. You're going to run into issues like one of the problems I mentioned earlier or here…
  • @Nick Shinn Yeah those are the round tipped ones I had mentioned earlier. You can't yield terminals that cut off at an angle like you would with a broad edge. With a broad edge you can get terminals like in the gif I posted but like I said the whole…
  • @Jasper de Waard Ah okay, no issues. I see what you mean. However, a sans serif A with little to no contrast is almost impossible(unnatural) in calligraphy IMO, unless you switched nib angles like it was freehand calligraphy. But when you do that it…
  • @Jasper de Waard Sorry man, I'm super confused. I can only assume you mean a sans serif A if both diagonals appear to you as having the same weight. Or if you mean like a roman square capital A, then I fail to see how it appears the same in weight.
