Has someone else done this?

I started doing this but idk if I should continue if someone else has done it.

  • Minérale and Totentanz come to mind.
  • I'm pretty sure I've seen these kinds of stems before, but that still leaves plenty of room for originality, I'd say. So no need to ditch it :)
  • Make it a stencil.

I would say continue, and see where it leads. Perhaps the serifs could come to a point, to match the points in the “crossovers”, for the sake of thematic/aesthetic consistency which, IMO, is important. And see how it plays out across the alphabet, and in different weights. Or as Marc says, try a tangent such as stencil-ization, because in every development you pursue—especially if you don’t look at “similar to” typefaces—you will exercise your own taste and personality as a designer, which will make the finished family (or just one font, if that’s what you eventually settle on) one of a kind.
  • Yes of course do it and let you discover what your own eyes see.

I don’t have an exact date for this sketch combining roman and italic letterforms into one, but it predates Totentanz. (I love what Minet made of his typeface.)

Stefan Ellmer’s Nœud is similar to yours in a different way.
