Type design positions in NYC (and anywhere, really) are rare. AFAIK only Hoefler, Commercial Type, and Frere Jones ever hire anybody. Between the three of them maybe one opening turns up annually, and I think Hoefler hires direct from the grad programs instead of advertising the positions.
I think Ksenya has hired before too, no? You might already be doing this, but if you’re in NYC – one of the places with the highest density of type designers and relevant goings-on – you’re really in the best position for exploring the type scene, growing your knowledge and experience, and getting to know the people. I don’t think getting a type design job is easy anywhere, but at least getting introduced to the people and learning more is arguably easier here than elsewhere.
